Student Journalists Honored in Pennsylvania News Media Association’s Keystone Media Awards

The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association awarded two Penn State Greater Allegheny GA-Zette staffers with honorable mentions in the 2023 Student Keystone Press Awards competition, which recognizes high school and college journalism that “provides relevance, integrity and initiative in serving readers” in Pennsylvania.

The GA-Zette competed in a crowded Division II category for four-year institutions (with an enrollment of less than 10,000 students) and this customarily includes schools like Slippery Rock, Shippensburg, Lehigh, and Messiah universities, among others.

Managing Editor, Carlin Whalen, was recognized for his continuing coverage in 2022 of the Greater Allegheny campus and its changes in leadership and challenges and successes, and Yousuf Ibrahim, a staff writer, received accolades for his review of the movie Rashomon when it was presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust at the Harris Theater in downtown Pittsburgh.

The GA-Zette, the official campus newspaper of the Penn State Greater Allegheny campus, has been publishing since the fall of 2019 and it remains an independent voice for student journalism on the campus and in the surrounding community.
