Disappearances
On March 22, 1977 in Tuscan Arizona, 39 year old prominent escrow agent, Charles “Chuck” Morgan left for work like he normally would, but didn’t return for three days. When he finally returned, he bust through the front door with handcuffs hanging from each wrist and one on his ankle. He explained to bewildered wife that he escaped his captors, but he couldn’t speak because his throat was painted with a hallucinogenic drug that could kill him or make him go bad. He also confessed to being a U.S. Treasury Agent. After a week, Morgan was finally fully recovered. Two months after his first disappearance, Morgan vanished once again. After nine days since vanishing, Morgan’s wife received a call from an unknown woman who said, “Chuck is all right. Ecclesiastics 12, 1 through 8.”
Discovery
Two days later Morgan’s body was found in the middle of the desert, with a bullet hole in the back of his head. Surprisingly, the murder weapon was his own gun. The sheriffs department ruled the death as suicide, but this didn’t make sense because Morgan was wearing a bullet proof vest and was carrying a knife and holster in his belt when they found his body. To make things even more confusing some strange object were found scattered around Morgan’s car that was parked near the crime scene. Some of these objects included, ammunition, weapons, a CB radio, and one of Morgan’s teeth wrapped in a handkerchief. A $2 bill was also found clipped to Morgan’s underwear and it had a number of Spanish surnames written on it as well as a map of the area.
After the discovery
Two days later an anonymous women called the Pima County Sheriffs Department, referring to herself as “Green Eyes.” She explained that she was the unknown women that had called Morgan’s wife. According to her, she met Morgan at a motel where he showed her a suitcase full of cash and that there was a contract out for Morgan’s life, but he and the hitman arranged a deal for his life to be saved.
No suspects were ever found, but it was believed that the mafia was involved because apparently Morgan carried out escrow work for the mafia. He also had recently testified in a secret investigation into illegal activity. Nevertheless, Morgans mysterious deaths remains one of the most baffling unsolved murder case in recent American history.
This was a very interesting read as always. I had never heard of Charles Morgan and this case and now I want to research more about it. I think it is really interesting that he was an agent and had gone missing twice before ultimately being found dead.
Mysterious stories like these with no definitive storyline are always interesting. I hadn’t been familiar with who Charles Morgan was prior to this, but it seems like he lived an extremely unorthodox lifestyle. I can’t imagine what that 3 day span before his death was like for his wife.
This was really cool to read! I actually watched a Buzzfeed Unsolved Episode on this a couple weeks ago, and you managed to provide as many details in 400 words as they did in a 16 minute video. I personally think that he was murdered by organized crime as a result of his testimony, but I guess we’ll never know.
