Hands-on learning in the Glass Studio helps students put classroom knowledge to good use, making concrete connections between theory and practice.

WE ARE…

Penn State Glass Research!  Our group encompasses all aspects of glass science and technology, including theory, modeling and simulation, physics and chemistry, bulk and surface characterization, compositional design and optimization, and more.  Click the links above to see details on our individual group members and their research projects.

Glass as a material of study has a long and rich history. Today at Penn State, glass substrates for electronics, optics, and biotechnology; glass fibers for insulation and reinforcement; glass for nuclear waste immobilization; and glass for energy storage are of primary interest. The design of new glass and glass-ceramic compositions and the characterization of their bulk and surface properties is a primary focus.

“I really enjoyed working with Dr. Seong Kim and Dr. Carlo Pantano on glass surface chemistry and its mechano-chemical properties. Thanks to the excellent minds and lab environment at Penn State, I become enthusaitic about glass. Staff members were of great support to my research activities. Now, I continue to explore the glass chemistry to develop novel optical fibers in OFS Fitel, LLC.”

PhD Materials Science & Engineering

“I am grateful for the mentorship of Carlo, Seong, Josh, Vince Bojan, Tim Tighe, and support of my peers as they helped me develop as a critical thinker and scientist. In my current position as Senior Development Scientist in the Surfaces and Coatings group, I am a part of cross-disciplinary teams that work on the fundamental link between glass surface chemistry, water and electrostatic behavior of glasses; impact of corrosion on glass product performance; coatings to improve attributes of glasses such as weathering resistance and adhesion; and develop methods to protect glass surfaces and keep them clean.”
