I am Kim Lane and currently reside in King, North Carolina with my husband and daughter. A couple of months ago, I made a career change from human resources to manufacturing management. After working in HR for fifteen years, I began to experience burnout and started thinking about what the next step in my career should be. I have always deeply cared about helping people and decided that ultimately, the best way to improve workers’ lives was to help make the company the best it could be. When our manufacturing manager turned in his intent to retire, I thought that would be a good first step in my new career path. My long-term goal will still be focused upon ensuring that my work will either directly or indirectly positively impact workers’ lives, but I’m unsure as to what specific job that will entail in the future; I’m definitely open to anything.
When thinking about quotes that really speak to me, I tend to gravitate toward things that are relatable. Marillyn Hewson (the CEO of Lockheed Martin) said, “If you want to be a great leader yourself, you always have to be thinking about other people. You have to be able to motivate others and inspire them to reach their own potential” (2009). This message transcends across all workplaces and can be applied in any situation. I like it because it reminds me that I can only do so much; ultimately, it’s up to the workers to increase productivity or produce better quality products. However, it’s up to me to help them want to do these things.
I don’t think I have any unusual hobbies or interests, but I do enjoy to travel. The picture is from our trip last year to the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This was my first time in California and I was blown away by the beauty! Although, a new year comes with new adventures and I can’t wait to see where we end up.
Have a great semester!
