Diversity is something I am very passionate about and it is something that people notice right away, whether they notice it in a positive way, or a negative way. I live in a city that is a melting pot and encourages diversity because of all the benefits it allows. I have learned so much about different people’s cultures because my heart and my mind has been open to the notion of diversity and integration, and understood that I could gain so much knowledge by taking the time to learn about where people come from and make myself more globally literate.
In other parts of the country people have so many problems with surface diversity and it makes them uncomfortable, and with something as uncontrollable as skin tone and features, its very disheartening to think about how much more people will hate or get the wrong idea about someone, the further they get below the surface if they already don’t like what they see at face value. I work at a company that is comprised of people with so many different races and lifestyles and does nothing more than make people more whole and more understanding.
I think if people realized that underneath, we are more alike than we are different, we would all appreciate our lives and the lives of our neighbors more. My personal goal is to bring people together, I want to know about your country and the culture of your people, I want to share mine with you and talk about our differences. I want to be able to take something away from your lifestyle and incorporate it with mine and share the love for each others being. Many people have a problem or a fear with that and it is more damaging than we can immediately understand.
For anyone that is reading this, I urge you to put your fears and the things you preconceive about others, to the side and get to know people for their souls first. Realize that we are born the way we are born, because it is supposed to be this way and try to be optimistic about the reasons why we are different. Globalize, get familiar, and trust that there is always something to be learned from the person next to you, regardless of how different you are. Lastly, look at this picture below. The world in a nutshell, we are different, but we can be different together, and its beautiful.
