I came across this picture on the internet, and it’s a picture that I find to be very powerful. I am unaware of the entire context behind this image, but from observing the picture, it seems to me there is one primary argument being made: We, as human beings, need to work together to end world hunger.
For starters, it’s important to note the visual pun at hand. People who are starving require lots of help. A phrase synonymous with the word “help” is “lending a hand”. The person reaching out to the starving child is both literally and figuratively lending a hand to a person who needs it most. This visual pun serves as a perfect representation of what those suffering from hunger so desperately need: a helping hand.
It’s also important to point out the difference in the size of the hands in this picture. The hand on the right is obviously much larger/meatier than the one on the left. This insinuates that the person on the right is far more well-fed and well-nourished compared to the person on the left. Ultimately, it’s going to have to come down to the more fortunate people in this world helping those that are less fortunate. That’s the only way to solve this horrible issue; those who are able to help need to step up to the plate.
Lastly, the skin colors of these two people is relevant to what this image is hoping to convey. Obviously, the person on the left is black and the person on the right is white. Racially speaking, these two are very different. But that truth is irrelevant. In order to solve the problem of world hunger, people of all backgrounds need to contribute. Race, gender, religion, or whatever other distinctions there are don’t matter. What matters is that people are starving to death, and we, as humans, need to unite to stop it.
