The Future of Flight: Thermal Challenges and Opportunities
The Future of Flight is one in which Sustainability is critical. At GE, we are hard at work creating a sustainable Aviation future for both our commercial and military customers. Announced in June, the Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines, or RISE, program for single-aisle aircraft will demonstrate the advanced technologies that will reduce fuel burn and emissions by more than 20% over today’s CFM LEAP engine by the mid-2030s. The RISE program will validate improvements in both propulsive (open fan) and thermodynamic (compact core) efficiency, while also demonstrating new low-emissions combustors and hybrid-electric systems. To achieve these improvements, greater thermal loads will need to be managed with less negative impact on thermodynamic efficiency than today’s engines. This seminar will discuss the thermal challenges that will be encountered and opportunities for advanced component cooling technologies and thermal management systems to address these challenges, many of which are now under development at GE Research.
