Broccoli Production in Guanajuato, Mexico

The main objective of our trip to Mexico is to study the effects of agriculture in the region of Guanajuato. Guanajuato is an important agricultural sector of Mexico. Over 30% of the state is suitable for agricultural use.

A lot of crops can be grown in this region. These crops include corn, sorghum, wheat, beans, barley, and broccoli. Guanajuato has become the leading exporter of broccoli in Mexico, according to FreshPlaza. It was responsible for over 70% of shipments to the United States in 2014. Broccoli production in the region makes it possible for us in Pennsylvania, and people elsewhere to have fresh broccoli readily available year-round.

Broccoli harvesting in Guanajuato is different than the practices typically seen in California and Arizona. The broccoli is harvested by hand and carried using special backpacks. There are several reasons for this. The type of broccoli that is grown in the region is taller than most seen in the United States. Also, during the rainy season, the ground can get very muddy, making it hard for equipment to be used in the fields. It is important to keep the soil structure in tact because growers can get three and sometimes even four cuts of broccoli off of one crop.

Guanajuato is an important agricultural state in Mexico. Many crops can be grown in the region; however, Guanajuato has become the leading exporter of broccoli in Mexico.

I think it is very important to understand just how influential Mexico’s agricultural industry is over our own food system. I’m eager to get a first-hand look at the entire production process of broccoli in Guanajuato!

Great information regarding the production of broccoli in Guanajuato, Glenn. We will be visiting Green Giant on our trip and broccoli is one of the main vegetables processed at this plant. If all goes as planned, we will learn how broccoli is grown, harvested and processed by Green Giant. I hope everyone likes broccoli! This is one of the sites where you will need to wear solid, hard toed foot wear.
