Has your mouth ever started to water as you got a whiff of a delicious burger? Have you ever become really hungry after seeing the wonderful site of a hamburger? Do you know the feeling of special sauce oozing onto you fingers as you take your first bite into heaven? Have you ever gotten excited after hearing of a new burger place you just have to try? Most importantly do you know what an amazing hamburger truly tastes like? If your answer was yes, then you’ve come to the right place. Your five senses can help you differentiate between an extraordinary hamburger and its inferior.
How should a burger smell?
When I think of what a burger smells like I think of the scent I breathe in when I bring a burger to my mouth and am about to take a bite out of it. I think about how all of the toppings and sauces mix together to create a perfect smell. Although this is what most people may think of when they are asked this, that is not the answer a chef might give you. A very important smell for a burger is how the meat smells before you cook it. According to Howcast.com, spoiled beef will smell off and will often resemble the smell of ammonia or sulfur. We definitely don’t want our meat smelling like that!
How is a burger supposed to look?
When I am served a burger the first thing I notice is it’s appearance. I don’t want to eat a hamburger that doesn’t look appetizing. The beef itself should not be charred to a crisp but it also shouldn’t be dripping in blood. I only eat things that are safe for me so if you are served a burger that is not cooked enough you should send that back to the kitchen right away! When I examine a burger it often gets me to think about the meats’ origin. Is this good quality beef or not? Usually that is easy to figure out by taking note of where you are. If you are in McDonalds you are not eating high quality beef, whereas if you were in a 5 star steak house you would assume that you are eating 5 star beef.
How is a burger supposed to feel?
What do you imagine when you bite into a burger? I think that most people would agree that a good burger should be juicy definitely not dry. A hamburger should not have a bad texture in your mouth. Nobody wants to eat chewy hamburger with a soggy bun, wilted lettuce and wet tomatoes. All components of a hamburger need to be fresh if you want the hamburger to be good. The perfect burger would have a fresh bun that fits well with the patty. You should get a good ratio of burger to bun in each bite. All of the other topping must also be fresh. It is not enjoyable to eat something when you can sense it has been sitting around for a while. When you are served a burger it should always be hot still. Fresh is best! It is also important that when you chew a hamburger that you don’t bite down onto hard pieces. I have had my fair share of burgers like that and they are not enjoyable.
What have you heard about burgers?
I don’t know about you, but when someone tells me that a restaurant has good burgers I always have to go try it for myself. I don’t try just any old burger though so I will often do my research. A quick question to Siri will usually do the trick. I usually will look to make sure that I am not about to show up at a fast food place because those burgers are just impostors. I also always listening out for people talking about where they didn’t like a burger from. If one person didn’t like it there is probably a good reason. Reading reviews or restaurants before you go can often help you decide if you are going to have a good food experience when you get there.
Last but certainly not least, what about taste?
The absolute most important part of what makes a good burger so divine is its taste! I have had burgers in the past that have been so tasty that just thinking about them makes my mouth water. Obviously the taste of a “good” burger is an opinion but there are some key things that can make or break a burger. Some may say the seasoning on the meat is what makes one burger so good while another person may say that another burger is way too seasoned. Others may say the best part of a burger is it’s special sauce. This is my personal favorite though as good as a sauce can be, you never want it to be too overwhelming. There should not be too much sauce that the bun begins to slide around and get soggy but you also don’t want a completely dry burger. It is important with any component of the burger that it is not to overpowering and lets all of the components work together. To determine if a burger tastes is good just simply ask yourself do I want more of it? If you do, then it is clear that you enjoyed it! Whether it is the seasoning, the sauce, the type of pickle, the type of cheese, the amount of tomato, or just the fact that you want to have more of it, every burger can taste delectable in its own unique way.
