ted talk reflection and brainstorm for Controversy project
I was so nervous doing my Ted Talk and I’m so glad its over. I think I did a good job explaining and communicating the main ideas of my research fusion cuisine, but tat the same time I think I could’ve done better in my delivery. It’s very hard for me to speak up or do speeches so i’m trying to work on my confidence when talking to people or doing a speech.
History of a Public Controversy project brainstorm:
Gun control in Latin American countries: Latin American countries’s violence and crime rates are going up so quickly in the last years.
Cancel culture: (modern form of ostracism) a person’s trust is damaged, this person can be a creator from a platform or someone from the audience. This usually has negative connotations.
Source for Unit 2 Project
This is one of the sources I will be using for my research project. It talks about how different cultures create different perspectives and how they work together to create an overall universal concept. Also how different cultural backgrounds shape a person.

reflection (weaknesses and strengths of my speech)
After re-watching my speech multiple times I think one of my weaknesses was that when I was delivering it I kept looking at different places because I was nervous. I think focusing on one item or place to look at, or if the speech is in-person focus on looking at the audience is better than not knowing where to place your eyes. Also, something I could improve when delivering the speech is not having so many pauses, for this, I could rehearse the speech more so I don’t memorize it but I know the material I’m trying to communicate. At the same time, I think the structure of my speech and the way of delivery was good, I didn’t have as many filler words and I had a good voice tone so my audience can understand me well.
Draft Workshop for Rhetorical Analysis
1. Identify the writer’s main claim about the rhetoric, ideology, or and subtext of the piece.
Both of the pictures make use of ethos, visual rhetoric, and commonplaces to claim their rights for body autonomy.
2. Identify and comment on the writer’s introduction of a context (rhetorical situation) for this piece of rhetoric. Name one thing that might be added, deleted, changed, or moved.
I like how the writer states why the second image isn’t successful in using the commonplaces and ethos because when claiming their rights of not wearing a mask they are able to harm other people. At the same time, she describes the reasons behind it, for example, that the second image is including middle-class white individuals that can afford to pay for healthcare if they’re sick. Something that can be added is to proceed in a deeper way for one of the 2 images, don’t balance them but focus more on the rhetorical analysis of the most interesting one, so the essay has more analysis rather than comparison.
3. Warning flags: check any of the following predominant themes this paper contains that might suggest a weak introduction or thesis:
Advertising is everywhere___
Ads try to persuade us___
Life really isn’t like what the ad proclaims_!_
Ads have many components__
Ads are deceptive__ T
The ad did a great job__
The ad catches your eye__
4. Find a strong analytical topic sentence and a weak one. Explain why you have identified them as such.
“The second protest tries to utilize the same strategies that the first uses. They both use the same commonplace and the same colored text, however taking kairos into consideration, the use of these strategies does not elicit the same effect when used against the mask mandate. The exigence of this event is COVID 19 which has killed thousands of Americans and overcrowded hospitals. The argument of bodily autonomy can not be used here since COVID does not affect one person’s body, unlike pregnancy. People have lost family, friends, loved ones because people have been ignoring the mask mandate and continuing to gather as if this disease does not exist. This is what makes the protests so ineffective even though they are using almost the same strategies seen in the first picture. They can not effectively use the commonplace because what it represents does not apply when one person’s decision to not wear a mask can cause another person bodily harm.”
I think this is a great paragraph, it explains why the second artifact failed in using the same strategies that the first one used, it analyses how the movement has different priorities and why the contexts they’re in are important, for example, the context in the second artifact is a completely different one than the first one because the anti-mask movement can harm people, at the same time people from middle-class status are able to afford healthcare while others are don’t.
“The first amendment of the constitution states that everyone has the right to basic freedoms. Freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly. In the last 2 years, protests have been all over the media.”
I like this introduction and I think more explanation of the context can be added to it to make it a more strong paragraph.
5. Comment on the organization of the piece. What other possible arrangement strategies might make more of the material and develop arguments more fully? How well is the second comparative piece of rhetoric incorporated?
I think the structure of the piece is well thought of, I can easily identify the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The only suggestion I would make is like is said before, make the comparison not balanced, focus more on one of the artifacts, and in the last body paragraph do a comparison with the second artifact.
6. You wanted to read more about….
I enjoyed reading about how these 2 pieces can be looked at as very similar but have so many differences when analyzing them. I would like to read more about the ethos in the artifacts.
intro to rhetorical analysis essay
introduction:
“Want it all”, 3 words with a powerful and unforgettable message. We all know how much effort Nike puts in its marketing to create awesome advertisement videos, one of these projects was the “Want it all” video. The main message Nike wanted to communicate in this project is that perseverance and ambition are key to success. The advertisement starts with a little kid watching older boys playing basketball, as the video goes on he starts imagining what his future life could be as a professional basketball player if he continues his hard work, and follows his dreams. Nike’s main strategy is relying on the lens of trust, which includes ethos, pathos, and logos, to get to the audience and persuade them to buy more of their products. A similar idea is reflected in Adidas’s “break free” advertisement, which shows an old man trying to escape from what looks like an asylum, he wants to be free and is capable of doing it while using Adidas shoes. The author of this video uses visual rhetoric to create a reaction from the audience, it provokes positive emotion and gives value to the product.
Speech outline:
analyzing rhetorical situations of Nikes “Want it all” and Adidas’s “Break free” advertisements
The main message of both: perseverance and ambition are key to success.
Main topics:
~Use of pathos, logos, and ethos in both of the ads for comparison (similarity)
Ethos: Both use renowned athletes to advertise their products…also they both are known sports companies, they get their credibility by being the authors of the videos.
Pathos: Both use inspirational ideas to appeal to people’s emotions…
Logos: “Perseverance and ambition are key to success.” People can connect to logic in this idea…
~Commonplaces in both ads
feedback on classmate elevator pitch
Crystal’s elevator pitch interested me a lot. The topic she chose is a very controversial matter to discuss and I think she explained her ideas well, in an entertaining and easy way. Personally, I don’t know much about these different social issues that are of great importance, as a person that didn’t have a lot of knowledge of it I think I understood what she was talking about and why.
When she started with the slogan “My Body My Choice”, she got my attention immediately, because this is such a powerful group of words, and I don’t know if I’m right but I feel like because I’m a girl I felt like I can relate with that sentence. I like how Crystal mentioned the different meanings this group of words has in different people, for example as she said, for some, it means being able to wear whatever they want wherever they want, for others it can mean the right to accept or decline to get a vaccine, and at last that in this century the main meaning for this sentences is referring to abortion.
She used the lens of trust to explain the rhetorical situation of the artifact. More specifically appealing to ethos because women are the ones carrying the signs and people will be more likely to get the effect or reaction of people about the posters.
Overall, I think her speech was effective in showing her point of view about the “My body my choice” social movement. She explained very well the rhetorical situation of the artifact giving specific examples for example exposing the visual rhetoric of the women writing in big and bold words in the posters.
Nolan’s cheddar cheese / mouse advertisement: elevator pitch
The advertisement starts with a normal mouse looking for a snack when he finds the cheese and the mousetrap “kills” him, or that’s what the author is trying to make people think. Then he wakes up and becomes strong enough to lift weights.
There are a lot of strategies used by the company to persuade people to buy the cheese. For example, the music they used, at first it was a calm and gentle song, but then they presented the mouse working out with a particular famous song, the eye of the tiger, which people can relate to as victory and power, so the next time individuals buy cheese they can remember the well-known song and relate it to Nolan’s cheese.
The ad also shows the lens of trust, which includes pathos. When presenting a cute mouse as being a victim of animal cruelty when the mousetrap “kills” him, the author appeals to the audience’s emotions, specifically sympathy and pity. Then when he resuscitates and starts lifting the mousetrap it appeals to humor. This is presented so that people can understand the idea that Nolan’s cheese has a strong cheese flavor, not that it will make people strong, also there is no logic in the video because no mouse can lift the mousetraps or be stronger just by eating cheese, but that is what makes the ridiculously funny and at the end successful in its main purpose, which is entertaining people and persuade them to buy their cheese.
Thank you.
rhetorical analysis – mouse advertisement
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K8lrVjT6fM
This advertisement video shows how this mouse eats a particular brand of cheese and gets overly hyped for it, he is able to do human actions such as exercise. One strategy that caught my attention was the choice of music, from very calm music to a loud and hectic kind of song, also the second song is very famous in the boxing sport and movies of boxing, so it’s easier than people remember the music and immediately relates it with the brand next time they’re buying cheese. Also, it’s a funny and unreal commercial, because no mouse can lift weights, this makes the advertisement even children friendly.
The author also appealed to pathos, because at first, he made people sad when the mouse “died” in the mousetrap, but then the animal woke up and started lifting the weights, he played with the audience’s emotions and make people like the commercial even more, because it tricked them at first. At the same time, it can appeal to people’s imagination in how it would be if they take the action of buying the cheese, they will wonder in what good outcomes can come with that like maybe they’ll be stronger or it’s just so good they have to try it, that’s how people are persuaded into buying the cheese just by being seeing a mouse eating it.
The author was effective in communicating the message he wanted to express, as he made it very clear that the cheese makes people stronger and that individuals should buy it, he tried to persuade people into buying the cheese in a different way other cheese companies would do it, even tho this cheese is the same as many others it gave it a special meaning or memory to people that have seen the commercial before.
