The Honeymoon Phase
by Kaelynn Behrens
Tonight, he’s anywhere but here.
He wonders why this winter night feels warm.
To picture his wife asleep,
he’s lied again.
She remembers being happy.
She can feel an arm around her waist.
She knows how to make it through the winter,
follow it anywhere it goes.
What went wrong?
The country between them,
how it feels alone.
They know better.
Not making the coffee,
not saying good morning anymore.
