Edmund Kemper

The 6ft 9in Serial Killer

Edmund “Ed” Kemper, also known as the “Co-ed Killer” was all around frightening in every way. At his height, anyone would look intimidating. But, he didn’t just have his menacing appearance, he was also insanely intelligent with an IQ of 145. He is the embodiment of evil and the prime example of someone who is psychotic and murderous.

The Crimes

The beginning of Kemper’s crimes began at the tender age of 15 when he decided to shoot his grandmother in the face with his grandfather’s rifle after they had an argument. He then shot his grandfather before he could come inside and see his dead wife. He turned himself in and was placed into an institution. When he was released at 21, his criminal record was expunged. However, he began his streak of murdering young women in which he took them into the woods, murdered them, had sex with their corpses, and then dismembered them. Sometimes, he would take their heads and bring them back to his house. He was a clear necrophiliac, and it was a common theme with all of his murders. The worst and the last of his crimes was when he murdered his mother in her sleep, decapitated and raped her head, and then used it as a dart board afterwards.

The Psychological Profile

Image

As with most serial killers, Kemper presented tendencies common with serial killers starting at a young age. He had abusive parents- an absent father and a mother who constantly insulted him. His mother also refused to love on him because she believed touch and affection would make him gay. At the age of 10, he killed his pet cat. He did it again at 13 but this time he kept parts of the body in his closet. After finding out, his mother began to lock him in the basement at night because she was afraid of what he was capable of doing to others.

As an adult, he showed obvious patterns with his murders. He obviously felt sexually inadequate because he only had sex with corpses, which shows that he is afraid of women and the possibility of rejection. This is likely due to his mother’s constant rejection throughout his whole life. Interestingly enough, Ed loved interfering with the police. He befriended a bunch of police officers who became his drinking buddies and hence inserted himself into the search for the killer. He would spark up conversations with the police officers asking about different cases. This desire for public recognition is another common theme among serial killers because they view it as a game and they feel a high from evading being caught. Kemper loved the exhilaration of knowing he was right under the police’s nose.

In the End

Real person vs. actor

Ed Kemper ultimately turned himself in after he murdered his mother in 1973. He was tired of there being no progress on his case and was was done waiting. The police, who knew Ed as a friend, did not believe him and thought it was a joke. He was only 24. He admitted to all of the murders and was convicted on eight counts of first degree murder. Since he has been in prison, he has completed over 5,000 hours of book narrations. Ed Kemper has been brought up in conversation lately because he was highlighted in the Netflix show, Mindhunter. Personally, it is one of my favorite shows I have ever seen and I definitely recommend watching 🙂

  1. This was so cool to read about!! I really like your passion blog’s topic. Hearing about serial killers and their stories for some reason is so entertaining. Since these stories always contain a lot of information, they can sometimes be hard to tell, but you do a really good job of keeping it simple and sweet. I like how you include the crimes, the psychological profile, and the ending. I have never heard of this guy, but his story does seem like an interesting one to follow. Thank you for including and mentioning the Netflix show, Mindhunter. I might check it out!

  2. I still can’t get over how tall this guy was, 6ft 9in?? That’s almost two feet taller than me!! You have a lot of really good information and I love the formatting of your blog. I always find the Psychological Profile to be the most interesting part, it reminds me of the show Criminal Minds.
