Penn State Harrisburg students can participate in 3 virtual career fairs in April! A ‘virtual fair’ means it is an ‘online’ event. However, there are several different ways this can work.
1. Some virtual fairs are opportunities to chat online with recruiters, during specific times. This is how the Hire BIG 10 Plus Fair on April 7-8 is set up. When you go to this fair’s website, you will have the opportunity to register for the fair by setting up an online account and uploading your resume in advance of the fair date.
An additional button for Jobseekers, will bring up the list of registered employers and the day/hours that they will be on line, with additional information about the type of business they are and the types of positions they are recruiting for. Make note of the scheduled times for the companies in which you are interested. There is also a button where you can express interest in that company, even before the fair begins.
Be sure to read the accompanying instructions or details and be ready with your own questions before the scheduled chat begins. You will be typing your questions and reading the company’s answers in most cases. These are group chats in most cases, unless the recruiter invites you to a private chat. Some employers may also use the video option, so you can see them in real time answering your questions.
2. The Working In PA Online Career Fair on April 14 is a similar event. Students will be able to network with employers at specific times through this website; just follow the instructions to create an account, log-in, and connect! Once you register for this event, which should be done in advance, you will receive an email with instructions on how to set-up your online profile prior to the fair beginning.
Be sure to research who is attending the fair. Registrations update in real time so check often to make a list of the companies you wish to talk to. When the event is live, select an organization of interest and “Get in line”. At this fair, you will have one-on-one timed conversations with the recruiter. Review How to Prepare to make this conversation as meaningful as possible. Download Skype to be ready for a potential video interview if the recruiter requests it.
