The whole world is currently dealing with a global pandemic. In my opinion there have been three ways people have responded to the virus in England. The first group are people who follow the rules and guidelines wearing a mask and socially distancing. The second group consists of people who are not compliant because they are unclear about the guidelines and what is required of them. Then finally the worst group of all are the ones that just don’t care about the safety precautions in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 and refuse to wear a mask.
On the 9th September the UK government posted this advert that has since been adapted for many different media platforms from radio, posters and social media posts. I think that this was posted at the right time to affect as many people sitting in group two and three.
How was this advert so successful?
There has definitely been a clear difference in the number of people wearing masks in public since the advert was first aired.
I think that this advert came at the perfect time to target people in group one and two. This is because a large number of people in group one were starting to become more relaxed about COVID-19, wearing masks less and in most cases giving up on social distancing. For the people in this group it reinforced the need continue to take the measures seriously to combat the rising number of cases.
For the second group it made it very clear what is required of them with the three trigger words being heard everywhere and unless you have been living under a rock will have heard or seen the words ‘Hands, Face, Space’ together.
However in the third group there has been a divide in response. The emotional conviction of the advert highlighting how these measures are to protect the people around us has changed some people in this group however there are still the selfish few that just don’t care!
I think that this advert came at the perfect time coming just as cases were beginning to rise again heading into the second peak urging for continued effort or individuals to start playing their part.
This advert, or rather the entire advert, certainly utilizes kairos, as it is directly addressing the global pandemic that we all currently find ourselves in. This is certainly a piece of media, that just really represents this period in time.
