After re-watching my Civic Artifact speech it was clear that I lacked confidence in my delivery. I think that this was down to two factors the first being I lacked a clear goal for my speech and the message I wanted to deliver to the audience. The second factor is I wasn’t used to giving a speech in this format.

To improve on my confidence in giving a speech I want to change the way that I approach my Ted Talk by doing two things. The first step to improve my public speaking is to have a clear plan based on the purpose of my speech. I think that if if spend more time preparing a plan it will give me more confidence in what I’m talking about rather than my mind focusing on what I should say next.

In my speech I was trying to focus on varying my tone and volume however I think this actually had the opposite affect. This focus made me self aware meaning I was focusing on the how the audience see me giving the speech rather than getting the audience to focus on what I’m saying. To improve on this I am going to spend more time practising my speech and listening back to it. I think that this will make me more confident in delivery as confidence and effective delivery will become a natural habit.

I believe an example of an effective speaker is Steve Jobs. Whenever Steve gave a speech at a product announcement it was clear the Steve was confident in delivery not just because he wasn’t afraid to shut down news reporters but because his goal was to get the audience excited about products. This clear purpose of his speeches meant he spoke with confidence because he harnessed the fact the focus wasn’t on him his goal was just to deliver the message about a product he believed and had confidence in.

I also think Steve Jobs is a phenomenal public speaker and his passion for the products he presented clearly bled throughout the whole speech. This is very similar to our stimulus material that focused on how our purpose shapes out public speaking skills.
