Turning Point #1: 1930-1973, abortions were dangerous, unpredictable, and illegal
- Billboards advertising abortions in specific states
- New York passed legislation 3 years prior to Roe v. Wade
- Socioeconomic barrier because women would have to pay for travel costs, and procedure costs, and lose their source of income for the extent of their travel.
- Newspaper Articles and personal stories about individuals who were arrested for aiding women receiving abortions
- “A number of Polish midwives faced manslaughter charges in the death of their abortion patients. Anna Kudrick, who was licensed as a midwife in Pennsylvania and New York but not in Michigan, was charged with manslaughter in the 1932 death of fifteen-year-old Eleanor H[ubbard].”
- Newspaper articles describing how a police officer was charged with “conspiring to conceal knowledge” after a woman died from an underground abortion.
- Personal Stories from women who received illegal abortions.
- Protest signs
- Photo of women with a sign that says “NO RETURN TO BACK STREET ABORTION”
Turning Point # 2: 1973 – 2022, abortions become a constitutional right (with limitations), safe medical abortions are available, and female reproductive health gains awareness.
- Roe v. Wade
- Vacuum Aspiration Machines
- allowed the procedure to be quicker, safer, and cheaper.
- Pro-life Rallies/Protest signs
Turning Point # 3: 2022 – Present, Abortions regulation given the states
- Roe v. Wade overturned
- Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization
- Protest Songs
- My country ’tis of thee
Land of inequity
Of thee I singLand where my mothers cried
Fought, bled, and sacrificed
For rights which we are now denied
Let freedom ring
- My country ’tis of thee
- Remarks from President Biden
- “Now, with Roe gone, let’s be very clear: The health and life of women in this nation are now at risk.”
Your points are organized and really capture the change of abortion throughout the time periods. My only suggestion would be to include the socioeconomic changes that happened when abortion was legalized by Roe v. Wade to highlight the contrast from the previous time period.
I really like the organization of your points, it’s very clear and concise. I also how you chose various types of artifacts to support your turning points. As far as your artifacts go, the one that caught my eye especially was the protest song “My Country Tis of Thee” because I had to learn the original song in my Intro Voice class this semester among a few other patriotic songs. The change of lyrics is very impactful to convey the hurt after having our rights taken away.
