The Controversy of American Football

One topic that I think would be interesting to look at is American football. This is the most viewed sport in the country, but injures many of its players. I think this controversy would be interesting to research because there are two very clear sides.

One side would argue the success of the NFL and the many businesses that are supported by the NFL. This research would also include information about the culture surrounding football and its importance in the lives of many Americans.

The other side of the argument would investigate the serious health impacts that can affect players. There is a lot of research to around the prevalence of head trauma in football players. One condition that is extremely interesting is CTE. CTE stands for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and it is caused by repeated hits to the head. The interesting aspect of this disease is that it can only be diagnosed after death.

I would love to investigate how people within the NFL view injury, how their families feel about the possibility of serious brain damage, and what people predict to be the future of American football. I would also like to research how football has changed over the years and what improvements could be made to develop a safer game.

  1. That’s a good one, I didn’t even think of that. I grew up with football and I remember the first time I heard about this issue and how shocking that was. I really like how you included the businesses attached to football because it isn’t just one group of people effected.

  2. This is a great topic to inform an audience about. The NFL industry has become so largely engrained in American society and makes billions of dollars in profit every year. While it is a critical part of the economy, the NFL pushes the physical abilities of its players to the max, and we do not often stop to consider the humanitarian impact that it has on the families related to the players. I had never heard of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy before, and I am interested to hear more about how long one can take repeated hits to the head before developing this condition.
