What Every Graduate Student Should Know about Plagiarism

I know that the new academic year has begun when units are requesting presentations about plagiarism. Dr. Eva Pell provided a very good introduction to the topic when she talked about research integrity. I’ve revised the presentation slightly to account for new features in Turnitin and also to update the current state of scandals in graduate programs.

I even learned that an online journal tracks the more philosophical aspects of this phenomenon. There’s nothing new here. There was wide-spread plagiarism in the Renaissance. What’s unique about our age is the “point and click” ease with which others’ intellectual property can be seized.

In the fall Training Services will provide a very different version of this topic to many first-year students.

Let the new year begin.
