Different Types of Potatoes
Baked, Mashed, or Fried who doesn’t love the delicious taste of the classic potato?! How did this love affair with such a simple root vegetable begin? It turns out the first ever domesticated potato was grown in a region of what today would be considered southern Peru and Northwestern Bolivia between 5000 and 8000 BC. Since that time the simple potato quickly spread around the world becoming one of the most important staple foods in many countries. Today there are over 5,000 varieties of potatoes, and yes, we love every one of them!
Potatoes, although classified as a vegetable, contains a large amount of starch (88%) which makes them great for keeping you fuller longer than other vegetables can. Potatoes are also high in Vitamin B6 which is essential for lipid, glucose, and and amino acid metabolism as well as Vitamin C which is needed for many aspects of the bodies healing process.
Along with being healthy and nutritious potatoes are also delicious! The versatility alone is just incredible. Potatoes can be prepared in hundreds, yes hundreds!, of ways. From simply baking, to roasting, to the fan favorite french fries, the possibilities are endless! Two great examples or deliciously prepared potatoes are Oven Wedge Fries and Potato Skins with Buffalo Chicken! See recipes below!
