Life After College

How will you be affected by COVID-19 if you’re graduating in 2020?

There are millions of students graduating from college within 2020. Some already have jobs lined up and some are still looking for a job. How will the students who don’t have jobs be affected by COVID-19? Is the hiring rate going up or down? In this post I will specifically be looking at job openings for students graduating with a B.S. in IT.

As of recent research and survey IT organizations don’t expect to be hiring again until late 2020. This in relation to low demand for goods our economy is going through right now. Layoffs in the U.S. are at one of its highest currently. Since April 2020, 102,300 IT workers have been laid off and it’s predicted the rate will increase. Most companies have halted their hiring for IT positions.

Do Not Fear

You are not the only one going through a rough time. Many people are seeing a decrease in the need for their specific degree. COVID-19 has brought unprecedented times to the world. As vaccines are being found and the disease is being controlled the world is slowly opening back up. As businesses begin to open back up and slowly make their way to normal, the need for IT positions will open up. Every business needs an IT specialist to function properly.

Within the next year, we should see more jobs begin to open up. Various U.S. Federal Reserve executives and economists have said they expect the current effective jobless rates of about 23% to fall back but still be about 10% in 2021. Do not fear over the current circumstance right now. As time moves on you will be needed.
