Meet Moises Osias Cambaco, Gro Greenhouses man-on-the-ground. With a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Instituto Superior Politecnico de Gaza (ISPG) in Chokwe, Mozambique, Moises works as the Greenhouse Manager for Gro Greenhouses based out of Xai-Xai, Mozambique. At 33 years old, Moises is married to Joana Bembele and father to two boys – 10 year old Peter and 8 year old Richard.
His interest in greenhouses began as a student at ISPG when he was introduced to them and he became intrigued by their valuable potential in Sub Saharan Africa. After he started working at a position for World Hope International (WHI), he was involved in greenhouse projects and learned more about how greenhouses are operated and maintained. Once GRO Greenhouses was developed through the partnership between WHI and HESE, Moises was hired as a GRO Greenhouses employee to oversee greenhouse development in the Xai Xai province. A total of 17 greenhouses have been built thus far in Mozambique since his start with GRO Greenhouses.
Moises is rarely at the WHI office, because he spends the majority of his time traveling around the Xai-Xai district, visiting greenhouses, and assisting and providing guidance to farmers. He values these face-to-face interactions with the farmers, learning about their strengths and weaknesses and advising them on how to increase productivity. In our interview, Moises mentioned he is currently most interested in discussing individual greenhouse profits and losses with farmers, in hopes of creating a detailed map outlining the range of most profitable to less profitable greenhouses and seeing if any specific trends or areas emerge as being very successful. Over the course of the following 6 months, Moises hopes to increase the number of greenhouses across Mozambique and continue working closely with farmers to ensure they are making (and getting) the most out of their greenhouses with increased yields and profits. He wants greenhouse farmers to get most out of their greenhouses by perfecting current strategies, as well as trying new techniques.
