With all of the different components of the greenhouse, there can be various problems for the respective parts. See below to learn about how to address common repairs.
Structure
Greenhouses are made from locally-sourced materials, including the wood. If there is a piece of wood that is rotting or damaged, wood from a timber yard can be acquired to replace the wood. The following specifications are required during repairs:
-
The length of the wood may vary, but the dimensions are 2 inches x 3 inches
-
Wood should be treated with carbolic wood preservative, wearing gloves and protective clothing
-
If wood preservative is not available, treat wood with engine oil or char the wood
-
Wait one day after treating wood to replace it
-
Tools, nails, and washers are all locally sourced; buy if necessary
-
Be careful not to tear glazing when replacing the wood
Glazing
Tears in glazing can be remedied by the following ways:
-
If left over glazing is available from construction, use to patch tear
-
Ideally, use all purpose polyethylene repair tape
-
Adheres well to glazing
-
Waterproof
-
Will not shrink, crack, dry, or get brittle
-
-
Duct tape can be used if necessary, but it may affect UV transmission through the glazing
-
If the glazing is breaks away from the wooden structure (as shown above), use appropriate tools, nails, and washers to affix the glazing
Insect Mesh
There are various techniques that can be used to mend holes in the mesh:
-
Using a needle and thread to sew the mesh back together
-
Utilizing a patch to seal larger holes, with excess mesh from construction used if available
-
Appropriate tools, nails, and washers can affix the mesh to the structure if it is no longer connected
