UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa — Scientists are studying a new COVID-19 variant named Omicron. This new variant with clusters of mutations is causing great alarm within the science community and the general public. First identified in Southern Africa this new strain is amassing global concern.
As worries mount over the Omicron variant the C.D.C. is recommending citizens to get their booster shots. President Biden said the new variant is “a cause for concern, not a cause for panic,” and although the variant hasn’t been detected in the United States, Biden urges Americans to get their vaccinations and booster shots.
The sheer number of genetic mutations the Omicron variant carries is causing alarm in many scientists because greater mutations within the variable may be associated with greater transmissibility or higher infection rate. Doctors around the world are trying to understand whether the current vaccines will operate against the new variant.
The U.K. has already announced amounting cases, and has extended their booster shots to all adults. Over the weekend, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new mask mandates and will be requiring testing for travelers to Britain.
As more and more organizations take action it is important to utilize innovative and responsive techniques to handle the spread this new variant. Companies may be getting apprehensive towards the possibility of a new wave but with PR, organizations can advocate for safety and healthy adaption internally and externally.
Utilizing PR tactics can allow companies to control their narrative, whether it be spreading helpful information or denouncing misinformation. Companies have the choice to communicate with their public in a way that will ultimately build up their brand and image, and help people survive through this time.
Here are 3 PR strategies to help your brand through this new variant.
- Fast and Transparent Communication
- Resources
- Fewer Channels
Why fast and transparent communication? The public needs to know what your companies plan or what your organizations role is to the greater community; whether that be frequently updating your publics with helpful resources or information on your long-term plan.
During this time it is essential for organizations to be giving their audience resources, like locations to get vaccinated or credible sources and updates on the new variant. Lastly, provide your public with a few channels of communication, whether that be twitter or instagram, having lesser channels allows for less misinformation and confusion. Maybe try it out…
Overall, this new variant is causing a lot of concern, but through awareness and caring for the other fellow we may all get through this. Hopefully companies are prepared for the worst and ready to come out on the other side.
