Technology and Friendship
Due to the advancement of technology, a lot of things has changed in our lives. It made our lives easier and faster in every aspects. On the other hand, what happened to our friendship? Did the friendship get better or worse? There will be some positive aspects to it, however, I want to show you how technology works negatively in your friendship.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up? I assume that everyone checks their sns such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat… etc. Because those social networks are so great that now anyone can reach everyone in the world through the internet. On Facebook or Instagram, you can easily find what’s going on with your friends. These days, it is really good to have interactions which quickly happens on the screen and by a click. However, because people are so used to have conversations through smartphones, communicating face-to-face might be awkward. According to Morris, she said, ” It’s where face-to-face communication is interrupted the moment we turn our attention to a screen”. When I walk through the street and building, I see a lot of people hanging out and talking to each other. However, the half of the time, they hold their smartphones and talking to the others. Then, I realized how people feel awkward with talking to their faces.
Moreover, people became so sensitive about ‘likes’ and comments which is the shortcut to end your relationship by a mistake. According to Morris, she said, “Most of the time, instead of asking for clarification (or calling), we automatically assume when words get misinterpreted. When we assume, we end up being more distrustful or upset by people’s words online and offline”. In my opinion, words can be misinterpreted and have different meanings by people. Thus, like commenting on someone else’s post, people always should be careful not to make mistake. By one mistake, there will be conflicts and troubles in their friendship.
Internet today also raises privacy concerns. For examples, on Facebook, they show whether the person is online or offline, which makes people very sensitive. On these kind of aspects, I think our privacy is not protected and guaranteed well. The internet shows everyone what posts we liked, what comments we put, and which pictures we posted. Thus, in my opinion, technology has several negative aspects affecting our friendship.
