  • On Thursday, January 24 at 5 pm in 7 Henderson Building, the Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Council invites student organizations to participate in the Peace Meal, bringing students from diverse backgrounds together to cook and enjoy a meal while having great conversation. Sponsored by the Department of Nutrition and the College of Health and Human Development, this cooking/eating/community-building event aims to bring people from different backgrounds together to connect over food, focusing on what we have in common, the need for physical nourishment, rather than what we don’t.   • Health Promotion and Wellness, a unit of Penn State Student Affairs, is currently accepting applications for HealthWorks, a peer outreach and education program designed to advocate health among students at University Park. Applications for the 2019-20 academic year are currently being accepted through Feb. 1. HealthWorks offers two unique opportunities for students with an interest in health and wellness to get involved on campus. These opportunities include facilitating one-on-one wellness services to peers and outreach and promotion through workshops and other initiatives. During the application process interested students will have the option to prioritize which opportunity they are most interested in.  
  • Penn State’s Student Programming Association Lectures Committee has announced a free lecture by David Hogg, one of the co-founders of March For Our Lives, a youth-led, gun violence prevention movement, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, in the HUB-Robeson Center’s Heritage Hall on the University Park campus.The lecture is free for all students with a valid Penn State University Park Student Photo ID and is funded by the student-initiated fee. Tickets are required for this lecture and are available for Penn State students to pick up starting on Wednesday, Jan. 9 in the SPA office, 226 HUB-Robeson Center. Non-PSU students can also attend, and tickets for those without a valid Penn State University Student Photo ID are available starting Monday, Jan. 14. 
  • The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration is Jan 21-25. Some key activities:

    • Monday, January 21 – World in Conversation will expand its regular programming to accommodate 600 additional participants — including students, staff, faculty, and administration.   • Undergraduate students are now able to apply for the 2019 Erickson Discovery Grants, with applications due in January instead of February. Each year dozens of undergraduate students from all campuses are selected to receive a $3,500 grant in support of student engagement in original research, scholarship and creative work under the supervision of a faculty member. This year applications will be open from Oct. 15 through Jan. 21, 2019. Those interested in applying can do so here. 
  • The College of Health and Human Development will be offering Summer Research Funds for undergraduates to complete research under the direction of a faculty mentor for summer 2019. Funds may be used for student expenses and project costs. Students interested in requesting this funding can fill out the form at https://hhd.psu.edu/summer-undergraduate-research-grants or submit all materials via mail/email to Heather Zimmerman, Administrative Assistant to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, 344 Health and Human Development Building, or emailed to hdh3@psu.edu. Please note faculty supervisor requirements below. Students must be enrolled in a College of HHD major or be a premajor HHD student. Deadline is January 31, 2019. Applicants will be notified by the end of March 2019 regarding funding decisions.
  • The Student Engagement Network Grant Program is accepting applications for Spring 2019! The SEN will be awarding grants of up to $3,000 to support student engagement experiences. Examples include financial support for unpaid internships or research opportunities, living expenses, travel costs, and conference fees. Grant funding can also be used to compensate a student working fewer hours in order to be involved in a student club or organization on campus. The application is due January 31 and can be found at http://www.engage.psu.edu/students/grants/.   • The Penn State Philadelphia Center is seeking interns for Summer 2019.   • Penn State’s Outdoor School is seeking counselors for the Spring semester. Outdoor School is a four-day, residential program for upper-elementary school students, run by Penn State’s nature center, Shaver’s Creek, and staffed by Penn State student counselors: https://www.shaverscreek.org/penn-state-students/outdoor-school/be-an-outdoor-school-counselor/
    • Penn State students must first submit an application. Students who are accepted will be registered for SciEd 140 or RPTM 140, Outdoor School Field Experience for academic credit concurrent with ODS.   • A new semester long residential program, Study Away Pittsburgh, is a good alternative learning experience for junior and senior level students. Study Away Pittsburgh is an affordable, transformative, urban educational experience for Penn State students in fall 2019. Modeled after Study Abroad, students are placed with community partners, and participate in an in-depth, community based learning experience in sustainability while residing in Pittsburgh for the entire semester.The community partners that students are placed with include non-profit advocacy groups, governmental agencies, multidisciplinary design firms, health care providers, socially responsible businesses and many more.   • Five minutes in front of 500 people — one monumental opportunity to turn your innovative teaching and learning idea into a reality. All Penn State faculty, staff and students are invited to submit your idea in the Open Innovation Challenge (OIC) for a chance to present it at the 2019 Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology on March 16, at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center. Open the door to collaborative research and explore how out-of-the-box thinking can spark new tools that advance student learning and reimagine learning spaces in higher education. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 25.

HHD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Upcoming Global Health Minor Information Sessions (2019 Spring Semester) 
    • Thursday, January 31 at 6 p.m. Bennett Pierce Living Center, 110 Henderson Building
      • The Global Health Minor is a competitive minor, open to any Penn State student who is enrolled at the University Park campus and who has declared a major field of study. During your work in the Global Health Minor, you will complete a five -week supervised fieldwork experience in Ecuador, South Africa, or Tanzania. This experience, along with course work, will help you develop the capacity to think, talk, and write critically about global health issues and challenges and help you prepare for occupations and graduate programs that demand global thinking, understanding and experience. 
      • Advising: After attending an information session, students who are interested in applying for the Global Health Minor should schedule an advising appointment to meet with the Global Health Minor program director, Dr. Dana Naughton. Thirty-minute advising sessions may be arranged by contacting the staff of the Department of Biobehavioral Health at 814-863-7256. Application materials will be provided to students at the time of meeting. Applications are due February 15, 2019 and are distributed to students only after their meeting with the program director.
  • Pink Zone–On Sunday, February 10, join the College of Health and Human Development, the College of Nursing, and the HHD Alumni Society in supporting breast cancer awareness by attending our Pink Zone 2019 pre-game reception and the Penn State Lady Lions Pink Zone Basketball game against the Michigan Wolverines.   Tip Off: 2:00 p.m.

    • Pre-Game Reception: Whether you purchase tickets through us or sit elsewhere, please join us at 12:30 a.m. in Room E/F at the Bryce Jordan Center for light refreshments (enter from the Founder’s Entrance on the East side of the BJC). There is no cost to attend the reception. Friends and family members of all ages are welcome.   • Students interested in research opportunities with faculty can learn more about working with faculty at the Research Opportunities web site.   • Take a Professor to Lunch (or Coffee or Ice Cream): The HHD Dean’s Office will pay for lunch, coffee, or ice cream for up to five HHD students and one HHD faculty member at any one of the University’s on-campus eating establishments. As one of the most popular colleges at Penn State, we know how hard it can be to get to know your professors in our majors. AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

  • If you are a first year student, applications are now open for the Presidential Leadership Academy and are due February 1. “The Presidential Leadership Academy is for those who want to think critically about important issues. Those who want to make the tough decisions. Those who want to make a difference in the world and lead by example.   • Have you taken an ethical stand or faced an ethical challenge? The Rock Ethics Institute is proud to announce that nominations are now open for the 2018 Stand Up Awards at Penn State. This award honors Penn State undergraduate students who have demonstrated courage, fortitude, and ethical leadership by taking a stand for a person, cause, or belief. Award winners receive a monetary prize and are honored at the Stand Up ceremony in the Spring semester. Any faculty, staff, student, or community member can nominate a Penn State undergraduate student for the award. Undergraduate students from all Penn State campuses are eligible. The deadline for nominations is January 25.
  • Undergraduate Research Conference Travel Support  Penn State undergraduates who are presenting the results of their research or creative work at national or regional professional conferences may request financial support to defray the costs of attendance at the conference. 
  • HHD Student, Faculty and Staff Award nominations are open!  Nominations are due January 31 for the following awards (link to applications):
    • Edith Pitt Chace Award, Nomination deadline: January 30, 2019-The Edith Pitt Chace Award recognizes an outstanding student leader and scholar. The recipient of this award will receive a $1,500 scholarship, which will be applied toward tuition during the next academic year.
    • Student Service Award Nomination deadline: January 30, 2019–The Student Service Award recognizes service by a student to HHD, to Penn State, and to the community. The recipient of this award will receive a lifetime membership to the Penn State Alumni Association.
    • Faculty Appreciation Award Nomination deadline: January 30, 2019–The Faculty Appreciation Award honors a faculty member who actively promotes relationships among students, faculty and staff members, and alumni above and beyond the demands of his/her job.
    • Staff Appreciation Award Nomination deadline: January 30, 2019–The Staff Appreciation Award honors a staff member who actively promotes relationships among students, faculty and staff members, and alumni above and beyond the demands of his/her job.
    • Small Project Grants Nomination deadline: March 15, 2019–The Small Project Grant program provides students and faculty members with an additional source of funding for projects that benefit the University community and/or enhance students’ experiences in the College of Health and Human Development. Such projects may include, but are not limited to, student organization service projects or events, undergraduate or graduate student research not pertaining to a thesis or dissertation, and projects that promote collaboration among students and faculty members.

FUNDING, INTERNSHIPS, AND MORE

  • Since 1986, hospitals and other health care organizations in the Southeast Michigan (Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint) area have provided paid summer internships in health administration and health policy to rising undergraduate juniors and seniors interested in eliminating racial health inequalities. These internships are part of the University of Michigan’s Summer Enrichment Program in Health Management & Policy (UM SEP). UM SEP provides students an opportunity to learn from administrators and policy makers in the health care field, under their direct supervision. In its 33rd consecutive year, the program now has over 650 alumni, with notable positions in hospital administration, government, policy, consulting, higher education, and research. Our program evaluations are consistently in the 95th percentile and higher. We are confident that through this experiential program, students will become familiar with health management and policy and consider it as a career option. Students that will be entering their junior or senior year in the Fall of 2018, and are interested in the health field, administration, or any career that will enable them to use their skills to advance health equity, are encouraged to create an application today. http://www.sph.umich.edu/sep Please Note: The application deadline is January 25, at 11:59 EST. 
  • The Amgen Scholars Program continues to offer undergraduates the opportunity to collaborate with faculty at top institutions on cutting-edge scientific research at ten renowned U.S. host institutions. Applications for the 2018 U.S. Amgen Scholars Program are now online.  Note that applicants do not need to currently attend one of the host institutions to participate. In fact, Amgen Scholars have represented over 680 colleges and universities to date. Applications close February 1 (February 15 for the California Institute of Technology). Eligibility requirements, as well as site-specific programming information, is available via amgenscholars.com

  • The National Academy of Social Insurance is looking for graduate students, recent graduates, and qualified upper-division undergraduate students for placement in its twelve-week, paid, summer internships. Students interested in U.S. social insurance and related issues are encouraged to apply for one of the Academy’s nationally-competitive internship programs – the Merton C. Bernstein Internship on Social Insurance, the Somers Research Internship on Long-Term Care and Aging, the Eileen Sweeney Graduate Internship in Disability Policy, and the Rashi Fein Internship in Health Policy.   • ENTREPRENEURSHIP
    • Nittany AI Challenge:  For the second year in a row, the EdTech Network is offering teams of students, faculty, and staff the chance to compete for grants totaling $50,000. Teams will be challenged to use the artificial intelligence (AI) platform(s) of their choosing to develop and present AI-based solutions that improve the student experience at Penn State, solve real problems that the University is facing, and/or generate innovative startup ideas. Visit the Nittany AI Challenge, the central communication hub for all announcements, discussions, criteria, and general information related to the challenge. Plan to submit your idea proposal by January 29 to be considered for the first round of funding.
    • INC. U! What is it? INC. U is a year-end “shark tank like” pitch competition to find the Top 6 Undergraduate student owned companies (undergraduates must own 50% or more of the company) to compete for $30,000+ in investment awards. Students compete in an initial video pitch competition and then the Top 6 companies are selected to pitch their companies to a distinguished panel of judges during an hour-long television show called “The Investment.”   Click HERE for a link to see last season’s show that we taped in April/2018.   This year’s competition deadline for Video submissions is February 10, 2019. The competition is open to all Penn State University campus undergraduates!  We are seeking the best student entrepreneurs regardless of what Penn State campus they attend.     • Summer Founders Program — Deadline February 15. WANT $10K TO WORK ON YOUR STARTUP OVER THE SUMMER?  Apply to the Summer Founders Program at the Happy Valley LaunchBox: Team must have at least 1 co-founder who is a full-time Penn State student in good standing (graduating seniors are eligible to apply).     • ENTI COURSES YOU CAN TAKE ONLINE SUMMER 2019.: Two core courses in the ENTI minor are available online this summer for students at any PSU campus.   Check the LionPath schedule for ENGR 310 “Entrepreneurial Leadership” and MGMT 425 “New Venture Creation.”  Both are required for any ENTI cluster.  
    • PENN STATE STARTUP WEEK: Mark your calendar and plan to participate in Penn State Startup Week, April 1 -5.  This special week is devoted to celebrating student entrepreneurship.  Find details and the schedule at  https://startupweek.psu.edu/.   
    • The TechCelerator Model Works! Just ask any one of the nearly 100 companies that have successfully launched.  These startups have created nearly 200 jobs and generated more than $14M in revenue. Have you ever wondered what it would take run your own startup?  Ben Franklin’s TechCelerator @State College is inviting local entrepreneurs, undergrads, grad students, Post-Docs, Professors and university researchers to participate in their next 10-Week Business Startup Accelerator. The weekly classes will run on Tuesdays – March 19, 2019 – May 14, 2019, from 2:00 – 5:00 P.M. with Graduation on May 21st from 2:00 – 7:00. Plus, weekly 1-hour mentoring sessions.     • Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) Wednesday, January 23, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Led by Andrew Belser, Professor of Movement, Voice, and Acting ADRI director and certified Feldenkrais Instructor Andy Belser will teach this series of Awareness Through Movement lessons. Each class features a different Feldenkrais exercise or “lesson,” and involves gentle movements, done slowly with minimal effort, while paying attention to your own experience.   • On Jan. 23, Penn State Provost Nick Jones will host a Town Hall meeting for the University community to discuss the University’s 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, “Our Commitment to Impact.” The event will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Foster Auditorium, 102 Paterno Library, on the University Park campus. It will also be livestreamed at LiveEvents.psu.edu for community members at all Penn State campuses to view.
