  • Academic Calendar Reminder:
    • Summer Registration begins February 4. Remember all World Campus classes are open for summer registration.  Work ahead, catch up or just take that tough class when you can focus on it.  Check LionPath for the courses offered.

    • This is a great study abroad program for research-minded students: https://hhd.psu.edu/undergraduate/study-abroad/hhd-study-abroad-programs The University of Auckland has once again selected Penn State as the recipient of 5 student scholarships for the Northern Hemisphere Summer Research Program! On this program, students will conduct a research project under the supervision of a professor at the University of Auckland for eight weeks between June and August. Students will receive s stipend of up to NZ $4,000 and NZ $2,000 towards the cost of travel. Research programs to which students can apply are listed at the Northern Hemisphere Summer Research Scholarship program website. The application deadline is February 4, 2019.  Students should email the University of Auckland directly at summerresearch@auckland.ac.nz with any questions.

  • The College of Health and Human Development will be offering Summer Research Funds for undergraduates to complete research under the direction of a faculty mentor for summer 2019. Funds may be used for student expenses and project costs. Students interested in requesting this funding can fill out the form at https://hhd.psu.edu/summer-undergraduate-research-grants or submit all materials via mail/email to Heather Zimmerman, Administrative Assistant to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, 344 Health and Human Development Building, or emailed to hdh3@psu.edu. Please note faculty supervisor requirements below. Students must be enrolled in a College of HHD major or be a premajor HHD student. Deadline is January 31, 2019. Applicants will be notified by the end of March 2019 regarding funding decisions.
  • The Student Engagement Network Grant Program is accepting applications for Spring 2019! The SEN will be awarding grants of up to $3,000 to support student engagement experiences. Examples include financial support for unpaid internships or research opportunities, living expenses, travel costs, and conference fees. Grant funding can also be used to compensate a student working fewer hours in order to be involved in a student club or organization on campus. The application is due January 31 and can be found at http://www.engage.psu.edu/students/grants/.   • Health Promotion and Wellness, a unit of Penn State Student Affairs, is currently accepting applications for HealthWorks, a peer outreach and education program designed to advocate health among students at University Park. Applications for the 2019-20 academic year are currently being accepted through Feb. 1. HealthWorks offers two unique opportunities for students with an interest in health and wellness to get involved on campus. These opportunities include facilitating one-on-one wellness services to peers and outreach and promotion through workshops and other initiatives. During the application process interested students will have the option to prioritize which opportunity they are most interested in.
  • The Amgen Scholars Program continues to offer undergraduates the opportunity to collaborate with faculty at top institutions on cutting-edge scientific research at ten renowned U.S. host institutions. Applications for the 2018 U.S. Amgen Scholars Program are now online.  Note that applicants do not need to currently attend one of the host institutions to participate. In fact, Amgen Scholars have represented over 680 colleges and universities to date. Applications close February 1 (February 15 for the California Institute of Technology). Eligibility requirements, as well as site-specific programming information, is available via amgenscholars.com
  • The National Academy of Social Insurance is looking for graduate students, recent graduates, and qualified upper-division undergraduate students for placement in its twelve-week, paid, summer internships. Students interested in U.S. social insurance and related issues are encouraged to apply for one of the Academy’s nationally-competitive internship programs – the Merton C. Bernstein Internship on Social Insurance, the Somers Research Internship on Long-Term Care and Aging, the Eileen Sweeney Graduate Internship in Disability Policy, and the Rashi Fein Internship in Health Policy. The Academy’s internship program has focused on developing young leaders in the social insurance field for nearly 30 years.   • Penn State’s Outdoor School is seeking counselors for the Spring semester.   • Pink Zone–On Sunday, February 10, join the College of Health and Human Development, the College of Nursing, and the HHD Alumni Society in supporting breast cancer awareness by attending our Pink Zone 2019 pre-game reception and the Penn State Lady Lions Pink Zone Basketball game against the Michigan Wolverines.   Tip Off: 2:00 p.m.

  • PENN STATE SMEAL SUPPLY CHAIN PITCH COMPETITION. Smeal’s Center for Supply Chain Research™ (CSCR™) and The Farrell Center for Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation are once again hosting the 2019 Penn State Smeal Supply Chain Pitch Contest open to all Penn State undergraduate students at all Commonwealth campuses. This year’s contest final round will be held on Monday evening, April 1st, in the Steimer Auditorium in the Forest Resources Building at University Park, but students must submit their application by Wednesday, February 6th, to be considered for the contest. Through the generosity of CSCR™ Corporate Sponsors, the 2018 top four teams won awards totaling $12,500. Currently, the 2019 contest sponsor roster includes Wegmans, KANE is Able, Lansdale Warehouse, and CVS Health, and we hope to add several more contest sponsors before the April 1st final round.   • Info Session: Research and You: Unpacking Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry, February 5, 2019 11:00 – 12:00 PM in 312 Boucke: If you wonder what “research” means, especially as an undergraduate student, or you want to know more about finding undergrad research opportunities, then this info session is for you. We will demystify research across disciplines, teach you how to find those opportunities, talk through finding mentors, and explain how to use your interests and scholarship to create a unique research project.
  • Fulbright U.K. Summer Institutes: The Fulbright U.K. Summer Institutes are three-to-four week programs for first or second-year U.S.-citizen undergraduate students with little prior international experience. Participants can explore the culture, heritage, and history of the U.K. while experiencing higher education at a U.K. university. The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs.  This includes round-trip airfare from the U.S. to the U.K., tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance.   • Info Session: Gilman Scholarship, February 6, 2019, 11:00 – 12:00 PM in 120 Sackett, The Gilman Scholarship offers funding for undergraduates who are U.S. citizens receiving Federal Pell Grants to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.   • McKinsey Freshman Diversity Leadership Academy: Apply by February 28, 2019 The McKinsey Freshman Diversity Leadership Academy aims to support talented Black, African American, Hispanic, Latino, and/or Native American college freshmen in their professional growth. Through a 1.5-day program, students will be able to build their leadership, team problem-solving, and case preparation skills. In addition, they will learn more about the management consulting industry, careers at McKinsey, and our application process. The event will take place on April 5th – 6th , 2019, in Norwalk, CT.   • A new semester long residential program, Study Away Pittsburgh, is a good alternative learning experience for junior and senior level students. Study Away Pittsburgh is an affordable, transformative, urban educational experience for Penn State students in fall 2019. Modeled after Study Abroad, students are placed with community partners, and participate in an in-depth, community based learning experience in sustainability while residing in Pittsburgh for the entire semester. The community partners that students are placed with include non-profit advocacy groups, governmental agencies, multidisciplinary design firms, health care providers, socially responsible businesses and many more.   • Global Health Minor: The Global Health Minor is a competitive minor, open to any Penn State student who is enrolled at the University Park campus and who has declared a major field of study. During your work in the Global Health Minor, you will complete a five -week supervised fieldwork experience in Ecuador, South Africa, or Tanzania. This experience, along with course work, will help you develop the capacity to think, talk, and write critically about global health issues and challenges and help you prepare for occupations and graduate programs that demand global thinking, understanding and experience. 
    • Advising: After attending an information session, students who are interested in applying for the Global Health Minor should schedule an advising appointment to meet with the Global Health Minor program director, Dr. Dana Naughton. Thirty-minute advising sessions may be arranged by contacting the staff of the Department of Biobehavioral Health at 814-863-7256. Application materials will be provided to students at the time of meeting. Applications are due February 15, 2019 and are distributed to students only after their meeting with the program director.

    • STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARD Purpose: The purpose of this award is to recognize a Penn State University staff person who demonstrates integrity, respect, and excellence in all aspects of their position.
    • STAFF MORALE AWARD Purpose: The purpose of this award is to recognize a Penn State University staff person who demonstrates enthusiasm and optimism in order to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive work environment for all. 
    • STAFF LEADERSHIP AWARD Purpose: The purpose of this award is to recognize a Penn State University staff person who demonstrates excellence in leadership and serves as a positive role model for others.

  • Take a Professor to Lunch (or Coffee or Ice Cream): The HHD Dean’s Office will pay for lunch, coffee, or ice cream for up to five HHD students and one HHD faculty member at any one of the University’s on-campus eating establishments. As one of the most popular colleges at Penn State, we know how hard it can be to get to know your professors in our majors. AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

  • The Undergraduate Exhibition All Penn State undergraduate students, regardless of campus location, are eligible to enter the Undergraduate Exhibition.  The 2019 exhibition will feature different presentation types within two different time slots:
    • Engagement Experience Poster Exhibition (11 am – 1 pm) Posters highlighting student achievements in engaged learning experiences (NOT a research poster)
    •  Undergraduate Exhibition for Research, Inquiry, or Creative Activity (4 – 7 pm) Traditional research posters
    • Oral research presentation— 5 minute presentation for disciplines or projects for whom traditional research posters are not traditionally used
    • Performance – 5 minute performance (music, writing, poetry reading, dance, theatre, etc.)

  • Undergraduate Research Conference Travel Support  Penn State undergraduates who are presenting the results of their research or creative work at national or regional professional conferences may request financial support to defray the costs of attendance at the conference. 
  • HHD Student, Faculty and Staff Award nominations are open!  Nominations are due January 31 for the following awards (link to applications):
    • Small Project Grants Nomination deadline: March 15, 2019–The Small Project Grant program provides students and faculty members with an additional source of funding for projects that benefit the University community and/or enhance students’ experiences in the College of Health and Human Development. Such projects may include, but are not limited to, student organization service projects or events, undergraduate or graduate student research not pertaining to a thesis or dissertation, and projects that promote collaboration among students and faculty members.

FUNDING, INTERNSHIPS, AND MORE

  • The Autism Science Foundation invites applications from highly qualified undergraduates interested in pursuing basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders during the summer. Deadline is Feb 18. The proposed research must be scientifically linked to autism or a closely related field.   • The Fund for American Studies is accepting applications for the Summer 2019 Academic Internship Program in Washington, DC.  The comprehensive program includes academic coursework through George Mason University, an internship placement, furnished housing, guest lectures, as well as a variety of opportunities for networking and professional development.   • ENTREPRENEURSHIP
    • Arts Business Idea Competition 2019 Guidelines Who Can Apply? This competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any major and any Penn State campus. The only requirement is that the business idea/concept is arts-based. Free-lance, non-profit, for profit, hybrid, and small or large-scale ideas are welcome. Inform Dr. Gangi of your intent to apply as soon as you decide to enter the competition by sending an email to jjg27@psu.edu. Submit a pdf document of your business plan to Dr. Gangi via email by 11:59pm February 25, 2019. Finalists will be announced via email by March 18, 2019. Final Round. Four finalists will present (15min) for a panel of judges at Penn State – University Park, starting at 5pm on April 2, 2019. All finalists must be able to attend the final round in person. 1st place    $5,000,  2nd place   $2,500, 3rd place    $1,500,  4th place    $1,000 
    • INC. U! What is it? INC. U is a year-end “shark tank like” pitch competition to find the Top 6 Undergraduate student owned companies (undergraduates must own 50% or more of the company) to compete for $30,000+ in investment awards. Students compete in an initial video pitch competition and then the Top 6 companies are selected to pitch their companies to a distinguished panel of judges during an hour-long television show called “The Investment.”   Click HERE for a link to see last season’s show that we taped in April/2018.   This year’s competition deadline for Video submissions is February 10, 2019. The competition is open to all Penn State University campus undergraduates!  We are seeking the best student entrepreneurs regardless of what Penn State campus they attend.     • Summer Founders Program — Deadline February 15. WANT $10K TO WORK ON YOUR STARTUP OVER THE SUMMER?  Apply to the Summer Founders Program at the Happy Valley LaunchBox: Team must have at least 1 co-founder who is a full-time Penn State student in good standing (graduating seniors are eligible to apply). Founders must commit to working full-time on their venture (no full/part-time jobs, internships, or classes) from May 15th – Aug 7th in State College, PA. Dedicated working space in the Happy Valley LaunchBox, 24×7 access to the facility, mentorship, networking opportunities, and 1-on-1 help to take your business to the next step.     • ENTI COURSES YOU CAN TAKE ONLINE SUMMER 2019.: Two core courses in the ENTI minor are available online this summer for students at any PSU campus.   Check the LionPath schedule for ENGR 310 “Entrepreneurial Leadership” and MGMT 425 “New Venture Creation.”  Both are required for any ENTI cluster.  
    • PENN STATE STARTUP WEEK: Mark your calendar and plan to participate in Penn State Startup Week, April 1 -5.  This special week is devoted to celebrating student entrepreneurship.  Find details and the schedule at  https://startupweek.psu.edu/.   
    • The TechCelerator Model Works! Just ask any one of the nearly 100 companies that have successfully launched.  These startups have created nearly 200 jobs and generated more than $14M in revenue. Have you ever wondered what it would take run your own startup?  Ben Franklin’s TechCelerator @State College is inviting local entrepreneurs, undergrads, grad students, Post-Docs, Professors and university researchers to participate in their next 10-Week Business Startup Accelerator. The weekly classes will run on Tuesdays – March 19, 2019 – May 14, 2019, from 2:00 – 5:00 P.M. with Graduation on May 21st from 2:00 – 7:00. Plus, weekly 1-hour mentoring sessions. Don’t miss out on this no-cost opportunity! We provide up to $1,000 toward startup costs plus the chance to pitch your business idea to a panel of entrepreneurs at the completion of the course.     • Fulbright U.K. Summer Institutes: The Fulbright U.K. Summer Institutes are three-to-four week programs for first or second-year U.S.-citizen undergraduate students with little prior international experience. Participants can explore the culture, heritage, and history of the U.K. while experiencing higher education at a U.K. university. The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs.  This includes round-trip airfare from the U.S. to the U.K., tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance.     • Info Session: Gilman Scholarship, February 6, 2019, 11:00 – 12:00 PM in 120 Sackett, The Gilman Scholarship offers funding for undergraduates who are U.S. citizens receiving Federal Pell Grants to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.   • Borland Project Space | The Zen Den Mindfulness Space January 7– February 1, 2019 With Zen Den Mindfulness Space, Associate Professor of Theatre Elisha Clark Halpin presents her ongoing research and practices demystifying the science of stress responses. Halpin’s goal in her work is to create accessible and engaging ways in which practitioners can reduce stress, increase creativity, and bring more fulfilment to their lives. She utilizes the processes of the Neurosculpting® and HeartMath® Institutes to guide individuals through the release of old patterns of stress to create new habits and behaviors. During the run of the project, Halpin will hold talks, classes, and workshops that introduce general audiences to mindfulness practices.
