“Happy New Year” is a 2014 bollywood movie starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Vivaan Shah, Abhishek Bachachan, Booman Irani, and Sonu Sood. The story takes place in Mumbai, India where Charlie, the lead role starred by Shah Rukh Khan works to recruit a team of people to go forward with his master plan. Charlie’s father worked for a very famous Indian diamond company as the keeper of the most precious diamonds. In the movie Charlie’s father is tricked by his colleague Groover. Groover proceeds to drug Charlie’s father (Manohar) and breaks into the safe that Manohar designed to keep the diamonds safe. Manohar goes to jail as he is framed for stealing the diamonds. He loses all his wealth and status. In jail he fails to keep his hope alive so he ends up committing suicide. Manohars son Charlie designs a masterplan to avenge his father. He recruits a hacker, a fighter, an Indian uncle, and a person who has the ability to throw up whenever he wants. Groover was moving the diamonds as per the companies say. They built an extremely protected safe with high technology, body guards, and several steps to access the diamonds under hotel Atlantis in Dubai. Ironically, the hotel is also hosting the World Dance Competition at the same time the diamonds were going to arrive there.
Charlie works on teaching his team how to dance to compete in the national dance competition in India. The winning team gets to go to Atlantis for the world dance championship. Charlie wants to use this championship as a cover to steal the diamonds. He gaslights a very famous Indian dancer into teaching his dance team how to dance. Throughout the movie you see Charlie mansplaining the women’s ideas and undermining her abilities. However, by the end of the movie they fall madly in love. Charlie and his teammates’ dancing skills are horrendous. Through cheating and hacking they manage to get to the World Dance Championship at Atlantis. Miraculously, the team not only makes it to the WDC but also manages to win the whole championship through sportsmanship. During the WDC the movie portrays racist stereotypes as a joke which is shocking as it is a movie produced in 2014. By the end of the movie Charlie manages to get the diamonds and flies back to India with both the diamonds and the championship cup. He avenges his father, falls in love, and gains his status back which is a very happy ending. 
I watched this movie with my friend on Friday Bollywood nights. We really enjoyed it and laughed a lot. However, I will give it a 6/10 rating just because the stereotyping was a bit too much and the plot was all over the place. Also, the two main roles which are love interests have a big age gap which we found very disturbing but we came to accept it at the end of the movie. Other than that I definitely recommend it for family night.
