Hindi 1

By the end of this semester, you will be able to read and write Hindi script Devanagari. You will use culturally appropriate expressions to introduce themselves and share their hobbies, seek information for everyday tasks like ordering food, shopping, directions and meeting friends. Learn basic grammar rules to understand the structure of the language.

Learning methods used in the class include interactive games, pair-work and in-class conversations.

No prior knowledge of Hindi is needed for this class. This class is not meant for native speakers or those who have studied Hindi in school in India.

Hindi 3

Students will gain functional performance in Hindi. They learn grammar, vocabulary, and structures to meet the functional performance goals. Students generally demonstrate the intermediate range proficiencies, although range may vary between Foreign Language Learner (FLL) and the Hindi Heritage Learners (HHLs) in the aural skills. The objective is to make all learners proficient in the spoken language to get comfortable in spontaneous conversation.

Along with the grammar, the course explores a variety of expressive forms in Hindi through very simple folk tales, stories, articles, letters, news-stories and poems. These literary snapshots of Indian life and language are included to offer you a better understanding of the language and to gain competency in comprehending not just the meaning but the essence of the writings in the Indian cultural context.

Pre-requisite: Hindi 01 and Hindi 02 or an equivalent competency (Instructor’s Permission required)

LANG 197: Accelerated Course in Hindi HINDI 123
Hybrid Course WeFr 11:15AM – 12:05PM, Tyson Bldg 108

This course offers an introduction to Hindi for students who have knowledge of South Asian language structure and have some oral fluency in Hindi. This intensive course will address all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and provide an overall view of Hindi, its basic linguistic structures, and script. Emphasis will be placed especially on reading, writing and grammar. By building on students’ prior knowledge of Hindi and other South Asian languages, the class moves quickly to cover the content of the three-semester basic language sequence in a single semester. As students acquire linguistic fluency over the semester, they will gain insight into Indian culture by analyzing song lyrics, articles, poems, short stories, and films. Students will read a variety of literary and non-literary texts, carrying on conversations on a range of personal, academic, and professional topics, write letters and other short pieces in Hindi. Students must have the prior approval of the instructor to take this course. This course counts as 3 credits for undergraduate students and is not meant for zero beginners. 

Hindi 2

Second semester Hindi builds on the basic understanding of Hindi and focuses on generating language through cultural themes related to friendship, family, festivals and films. Learners will engage in everyday useful tasks like travelling, interacting with people and comprehend the main idea of the conversations about familiar topics carried out in colloquial language.

Students will take field trips to interact with native speakers and use technology for practicing listening and speaking with focus on aspirated words. Learning methods used in the class include interactive games, pair-work and in-class conversations.

Hindi classes are small, interactive and give a lot of opportunity to speak and practice your Hindi.

HINDI 110: Intermediate Hindi

Fourth-semester Hindi: Hindi 110 develops basic intermediate to advanced functional proficiency (ACTFL Standards) in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through authentic discourse, texts, film and current issues. This course is a continuation of the study of the modern Hindi language and explores several aspects of South Asian cultures through the themes of fairs and festivals, marriage traditions, social hierarchy, gender roles and sports.

The course is designed for students who have completed HINDI 003 in language sequence or have the equivalent level of language proficiency. Students will collaborate with other students for negotiating the meaning of text and share their findings with the class. Instruction will include three modes of communication- interpretation, interpersonal and presentational and will include multiple modes of materials to meet different learning styles and proficiencies of the learners.
