Flag of New Okahandja

The flag of New Okahandja lies above, symbolizing the birth of a new nation and new people in the year 1904. The flag primarily makes use of three colors, red, white and blue, but is also accented with gold stars. The blue represents the land of both the Herero and Namaqua, and the white is the two populations respectively. Making up a good portion of the flag, the blue is intentionally made to represent the size and wealth of the land the populations lived off of for generations. The use of blue hints at life, beauty and peace. The flag also makes use of an illusion of symmetry, while similar, much of the designs are a bit off from one another to illustrate the beauty of imperfections of life.

On both the right and the left, there is a mirrored design, two white lines, a single red line in between and gold stars. In this design, the red line represents the Germany empire, dividing the Herero and Namaqua within their own land. It highlights German South West Africa from roughly 1884 to 1903, a time when the European colonizer took much from the area. The use of red highlights blood, conflict and violence, therefore it wedges itself between the two peoples, similar to how history played out in the years preceding the revolt. The gold stars represent the British, a reference to the heavens above and a guiding light for the Herero people to the Bechuanaland Protectorate following the Battle of Waterberg. The star layout connects the Herero and Nama people by gentle links, illustrating that while the peoples had their differences, together they would be able to defeat the German forces.

The words, “Let us die fighting” line the bottom of the flag, echoing Chief Samuel Maharero’s own words. It is symbolic of the center of the flag, which features a small blue circle within a larger white circle. This design illustrates the two cultures combined, now a large white circle, that represents unity, purity, and hope. Note that the blue is now smaller, symbolizing that the land is now forever protected by the people of New Okahandja. While the territory was divided in generations past and leading up to the revolt, it would move forward as a collective nation willing to defend itself against colonialism and other alien forces.
