Tunnel Vision is a colorful and creative tunnel popout book that expands to form a model of the Holland Tunnel and illustrates a child’s imagination of what surrounds the tunnel. This book was created by Maria G. Pisano dedicated this book to her father who worked in construction through harsh conditions and never receiving the recognition he deserved just like the workers that created this tunnel. As you open the book, it has a white brick pattern on the outside, and as it expands you peer through to see a vibrant sea filled with fish and coral reefs. The book is 200 centimeters (about 6.56 ft) long when fully expanded. I chose this book because I am from New York, and this was a tunnel I would frequently go through on my way back from trips from New Jersey. I remember being kid and seeing the bright white tiles within the tunnel and asking myself what was on the outside of this? I like how this book speaks to the rich history of the creation of a city and the intricate paths of transportation in it. The imagination of a child, homage to construction workers, and detailed illustrations create a beautiful book.
