Lessons learned from my job shadow turned leadership interview:
- Sometimes being a leader means having to herd cats, and by herd I mean refocus conversations, and by cats I mean long-winded people in really long meetings.
- Great leaders focus on solving problems.
- Whenever possible, do what you can to help people get to where they want to be.
- One of the best things about being a leader is getting to say yes. Say yes as often as possible.
- One of the worst things about being a leader is having to say no when you would rather be saying yes.
- Sometimes you have to deal with people who make your life difficult. This is the part where you go back to basics, and focus on solving problems.
- Listen!
- Keep calm, even in the face of insanity.
And after a particularly rough day, when it seems like everything has gone wrong, just remember… it’s not all bad; hang in there.
