The Devil Wears Prada: Sacrifices and Stilettos

Hello all! I can’t believe it’s almost mid-semester already! This week I watched a movie I have always wanted to watch: The Devil Wears Prada. I read an article the other day about Anne Hathaway being the 9th casting choice for the character in the movie. Around the same time, I also learned that Stanley Tucci—who plays Nigel in the movie—is married to Emily Blunt’s—who plays Emily Charlton—sister. I started looking up pictures of Stanley Tucci and John Krasinski—husband of Emily Blunt and Jim on the office—because I realized they must be friends. It turns out Emily Blunt, her sister, John Krasinski, and Stanley Tucci spent the holidays together this year. I don’t know why that all seemed so crazy to me, but it really is a small world.

Now, on to the movie. The Devil Wears Prada is a comedy/romance about a college graduate and aspiring journalist searching for a job to give her the experience she needs to get her dream job. She lands a job as the assistance of the Miranda Priestly, the main editor for Runway magazine, despite having no fashion sense. She struggles with fitting in at work and maintaining her relationships outside of work. The movie is a story of finding yourself and realizing what is important in life. If you’ve ever seen Mean Girls, it’s a very similar plot in terms of becoming the person you loathe, then finding your way back to reality.

From drab to fab—and somewhere in between

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. With the star-studded cast and the meaningful, yet entertaining story line and message, it deserves all the praise it has received over the years. Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt’s characters had me laughing throughout the entire movie. The movie is also surprisingly thought-provoking. The facade of garish gowns is stripped down to give you a glance at the horrors of the fashion industry. An industry where skipping a meal is part of the job.You are also forced to consider what is more important: your career or your love ones? At what point are the difficult decisions and the sacrifices you need to make to further your career too much?

I highly recommend this movie. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

  1. Oh my goodness I freaking love this movie. I love Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway! Have you seen the clip from the 2007 Oscars where Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt have a little skit thing with Meryl and they act like they are in this movie! It is so good. If you haven’t here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eblda6d_lOw
