PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS
Raymond J. Hohl, M.D. Ph.D.
Director, Penn State Cancer Institute
Aside from being the Director of the Penn State Cancer Institute and a practicing Oncologist, Dr. Hohl is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Medicine – Division of Hematology & Oncology and a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology. He is also a Founder and Office Holder in Terpenoid Therapeutics Inc. which was established in 2005. Dr. Hohl’s research interests are rooted in cancer pharmacology, specifically surrounding isoprenoid analog compounds.
Jeffrey D. Neighbors, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology
Dr. Neighbors’ lab is focused on drug development. A current research project is centered on novel agents called schweinfurthins that inhibit steps in the mevalonate pathway to reduce transcription of genes targeted by the Hippo pathway transcription factor TAZ as potential treatments for osteosarcoma. Additionally, we are studying the potential for statin drugs which inhibit this same pathway as treatment for neuroblastoma and other cancers. A completely different project looks at a family of natural products, pawhuskins, isolated from a prairie plant which have antagonist activity at several opioid receptors and are under investigation for the potential to increase wound healing by inhibiting opioid growth factor activity.
Prior to coming to PSU, Dr. Neighbors worked for a small biotech company driving the drug development efforts and has experience integrating development activity across disciplines from chemical synthesis to pharmacokinetics and ADME/DMPK studies. He is currently bringing this expertise to the Penn State Cancer Institute by developing a ADME/PK Correlative Science Shared Resource for which he is the Director.
RESEARCH TECHNOLOGISTS
Maithili Navaratnarajah, MS
Research Technologist
Maithili received her Bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Jaffna (Sri Lanka) and her Master’s degree in biology from Millersville University (Millersville, Pennsylvania). She previously worked as a Research Specialist at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Ophthalmology. Maithili currently works at the Penn State Cancer Institute (Hershey, Pennsylvania). She performs cancer research experiments in the context of drug sensitivity and mechanism of action, assisting in the design, execution, and interpretation of cell and molecular biology experiments. She also assists in the training of graduate and medical students and provides lab support as needed.

Ruoheng (Grace) Zhang, PhD
Research Technologist
Grace graduated from medical school in China with an MBBS degree, majoring in clinical medicine, and recently received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Penn State College of Medicine. She is currently investigating the mechanism by which the mevalonate pathway regulates cancer cells’ response to anti-PD-L1/PD-1 immunotherapy. Specifically focusing on characterizing the role of the mevalonate pathway inhibition in promoting tumor cell recognition and elimination by the immune system.

GRADUATE STUDENTS
Louise Blaha
Anatomy Ph.D. Student
Louise received her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from George Mason University and is currently an Anatomy Ph.D. student here at Penn State. She is interested in studying the mechanisms underlying the proliferation of Merkel cell carcinoma, with a focus on how Merkel Cell Polyomavirus (MCPyV) interacts with the cholesterol/mevalonate pathway. In her free time, she likes roller-skating, singing, and playing with her cats, Henry and Finley.

Alexis Scudder
Anatomy Ph.D. Student
Alexis attended Towson University in Maryland, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics (MB3) in 2021. She is currently an Anatomy Ph.D. student here at Penn State. Alexis’ thesis project investigates the role of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family proteins in calcium signaling and their interaction with the novel therapeutic compound, schweinfurthins, in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Alexis has served as a mentor for undergraduate students in the lab.

Afton Widdershins
M.D./Ph.D. Student
Afton grew up in Seattle, Washington, and attended college at the College of Wooster in Ohio, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology in 2019. She started her MD/PhD training in 2019 at the Penn State College of Medicine and is currently in her graduate training years, studying the mathematics of cancer resistance in Dr. Raymond Hohl and Dr. Andrew Read’s labs.

Michelle Green
Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Student
Michelle received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Pennsylvania State University with minors in chemistry and economics in December 2015. Michelle’s dissertation project focuses on understanding the role of the mevalonate pathway in ultra-high-risk neuroblastoma. She also works on a project investigating the role of the dopamine D2 receptor in glioblastoma. Michelle is an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and an undergraduate mentor.

Nicole Derosia
Anatomy Ph.D. Student
Nicole received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Elmira College and her Master of Science in Pathology from Boston University College of Medicine. Following her graduation, she conducted research in cancer immunology at Harvard Medical School to identify novel gene targets for small-molecule inhibitors. She is currently an Anatomy PhD student here at Penn State. She is interested in investigating the mechanisms underlying the immunogenic cell death of melanoma following treatment with the novel therapeutic compound, schweinfurthins. In her free time, she enjoys crocheting gifts for her friends, reading and recommending a plethora of books, attending rock and roll concerts, and investigating old and creepy locations.
