Steam Engine house

The engine houses were a vital part of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. There was 11 Engine houses in the system. The first starting in Johnstown and the last house ending in Hollidaysburg. All of the houses held a steam powered engine capable of drawing the carriages backward and forward. All on the engines were stationary beneath the railways. The engine houses continued to hoist mechanisms back and forth until the railroad ended. In 1852 Engine House #6 was destroyed in an explosion, and 3 workers lost there lives. Now Hollidaysburg built a dormant Engine House to pay tribute to the workers who lost their lives that day.
