Investigating Site Authority’s and Operators’ Risk Awareness in Refinery Stations
Ongoing
Research Team: Honeywell, Penn State University
Sponsor: Abnormal Situation Management (ASM) Consortium
This project aims to identify site authority and operators’ perception gaps of risk in refinery stations for different operating conditions to guide future developments, such as decision support, information integration, display design, etc. The project is presently in its initial stage, where a metric has been developed evaluating risk perceptions and a visualization tool created illustrating perception gaps.
Evaluating the Performance of Experts and Novices on Candidate Overview Displays Based on Existing Visualization Technologies
July 15, 2011 – Present (until July, 2013)
Research Team: Jung Hyup Kim, Ben Noah
Sponsor: Abnormal Situation Management (ASM) Consortium
The objective of this project is to evaluate the performance of candidate overview displays
across experts and novices. The broad criterion for evaluation is that a span-of-control
overview display should provide operators with at-a-glance situation awareness so that they
are aware of how the process is running and what direction it is heading.
Investigating the Impact of Operator Action Performance Feedback in Metacognitive Situation Awareness
January, 2012 – Present (until December, 2012)
Researcher: Jung Hyup Kim
Sponsor: Honeywell ACS Labs
The objective of this project is to investigate impact of an operator’s action performance
feedback in a dynamic learning environment on the metacognitive monitoring process.
The goal is to investigate the significance of metacognition in training to execute dynamic
control tasks.
