It All Comes to a Close

After waking up and enjoying another traditional Swedish breakfast, we made our way over to Goteburg University to listen to a couple of faculty members. The first lecturer elaborated on the history of Gothenburg and the university. He spoke about its rich export industry and the large shipyards which made the city so prosperous. In addition to the expansive shipping, he talked about how the King ordered for many fortresses to built along the river to protect it from the Danes, as the Swedes and the Danes have a long history of being arch rivals. He seemed to be very passionate about its history and he made the story of Sweden (mostly Gothenburg) very fun to listen to.  He also touched on the history of Volvo and it’s significant impact on the country’s presence on the worldwide trade stage.

After the history lecture, another lecturer talked about the Swedish healthcare system. He spoke about the system as a whole and compare and contrasted the system in place in Sweden to the system in place in the United States. It was interesting to hear his perspective as a researcher on the system in place.

Once he was through speaking about the healthcare of Sweden, we broke for lunch. A few students from Gothenburg University escorted us to a food market; it was very similar to the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. Once finished eating the local fare, they took us on a walking tour of the city. One of the attractions they brought us to was an old war tower, used to defend the town from any invading Danes. After seeing several landmarks, we bought some souvenirs for our families.

Upon returning to the hotel, we napped then went for our final dinner, the Last Supper if you will. We enjoyed an assortment of food, most of which included some type of local seafood. The dinner marked the last item on our itinerary. This program has been invaluable and provided experiences that I’m sure we will all take with us through the rest of our lives.

We hope you enjoyed following us through these blogs!

With love from Sverige,
Matt, Nick and Zach
