Dr. Smith earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon and completed her clinical internship at Yale School of Medicine. She developed the theory of Institutional Betrayal and has published several studies using her Institutional Betrayal Questionnaire. Her research interests focus on understanding the impact of institutional betrayal in healthcare systems and medical education. She is also interested in prevention/repair of institutional betrayal via education and interventions with healthcare providers. Her teaching interests include psychosocial influences on health, healthcare behavior, and the doctor-patient relationship; clinical/interpersonal skills in medicine; critical consumption of social science and medical research; and delivery of trauma-informed care. In the Department of Psychiatry Dr. Smith works with patients and specializes in treating complex traumatic stress disorders including PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Dissociative Disorders.
