What are Hydroponics?

Benton Jones defines hydroponics as “a technique in which plant roots are suspended in either a static, continuously aerated nutrient solution or in a continuous flow or mist of nutrient solution” (Barton Jones, 2014).

There are five main kinds of hydroponics systems. Two of these do not use a growing medium and are considered to be true hydroponics, while the other three do and are considered to be methods of “soilless culture” (Barton Jones, 2014).

Medium-less:

Nutrient Film Technology (NFT)

Aeroponics

Deepwater Culture

Rooting Medium:

Flood-and-Drain Nutrient Solution System

Drip/Pass Through Systems

Sub-irrigation
