Inside the 2018 Workshop

Kicking Off a Summer of Storytelling: #IAmDowntownBellefonte

In the summer of 2018, the first teen digital storytelling workshop, students completed writing exercises, showed off their theatre skills in-workshop improv exercises to help them be comfortable interviewing, learned the TLC of photo taking from PSU COMM professor John Beale, worked in partners to practice their interview questions and shared some silly times during breaks.

Similar to the successful “Humans of New York,”  students practiced interviewing and taking photos  of peers and family members before taking to the streets of Bellefonte to take photos of business owners and residents. Timing, lighting and composition all help make a great photo.

The project concluded with their photos and stories being posted on social media platforms of and Bellefonte Borough. You can see some of the final photos/stories here.

Thanks to the Bellefonte YMCA for serving as the hub for the summer workshops, and for all the many supporters of the workshop that was made possible by the Bellisario College of Communications dean (Marie Hardin) summer faculty grant program.

Many thanks for professors Maura Shea and John Beale for sharing their time and knowledge. And, of course, thanks to the parents of the teens, the Bellefonte Area School District,, the Bellefonte Borough and the amazing business community in downtown Bellefonte.
