5 Features on Canvas New Gradebook That Will Make Your Grading Easier

If you haven’t heard, Canvas has recently released various updates. One of which is worth mentioning is the New Gradebook. The New Gradebook provides an improved version of the Gradebook which makes grading more flexible and intuitive for instructors. Five features in the New Gradebook that can make your grading more efficient and productive will be quickly highlighted below.

Feature #1: Less Scrolling and Easy Finding Grades and Columns with “Filters” and “Arrange By

If you have many students in your course and/or multiple grade columns in your gradebook, perhaps you know how cumbersome it may be to find and/or arrange specific grade columns. With the New Gradebook, you can now easily and quickly navigate gradebook view using the Arrange By menus.

  • The Arrange By menu allows you to arrange gradebook by using a criterion of your choice.
  • The Filters menu gives you an ability to display gradebook by using one or multiple filters at the same time (Assignment Group, Section, and/or Modules).

To access “Arrange By” and “Filters,” click “View” menu.

Feature #2: “Grade Posting Policy” as a Replacement of Mute/Unmute

The New Gradebook has replaced Mute/Unmute feature with the Grade Posting Policy. The Grade Posting Policy allows you to set a default grade posting policy (Automatic or Manual) for the entire course without having to set it individually (like the previous “Mute/Unmute” feature). You can set the posting policies as Automatically Post Grades or Manually Post Grades. The default setting is automatic. Of course, if you wish to set the policy for specific assignments, instead of the entire course, you could still do so.

To set “Grade Posting Policy,” click the wheel icon on the right and Grade Posting Policy tab.

Feature #3: Dealing with Missing and Late Submissions Can Not Be Easier With “Late Policies

With the Late Policies feature, you no longer need to enter “0” for any missing submission. You can now configure the New Gradebook to automatically grade any missing submission as “0” by using the Automatically apply grade for missing submissions policy. In addition, you can also now set up Canvas gradebook to deduct points on all late submissions by configuring the Automatically apply deduction to late submissions policy

To set “Late Policies,” click the wheel icon on the right and Late Policies tab.

Feature #4: Adding Extra Information about Students Using “Notes” Column

Imagine that you would like to make specific notes regarding a particular student (for example: information about student’s special circumstances that might affect him/her work quality), you can now display the Notes column next to the student column.

To show the Notes column, click “View” menu and select “Notes,”

Feature #5: Fast and Easy Way to View/Enter Grades Using “Grade Detail Tray” Tool

The Grade Detail Tray tool provides a place to view and enter the individual grades. Different information are available in the Grade Detail Tray including grade, submission status (late/missing/excused), and comments.
