Whenever I’m feeling like I’m having a bad day, the first thing my mom would always say is, “Hey, have you had enough water today?” I used to feel really bad all the time, and since I began making a conscious effort to drink six cups of water a day (equivalent to about three water bottles) I’ve felt immensely better. (I should note that most doctors say you should target eight cups of water a day, but I found that really difficult.)
Physical Health: Athletes lose anywhere from six to ten percent of their water weight while sweating. If doctors say that effects of dehydration can kick in as early as when you lose two percent of your body’s water content, it’s super important to keep yourself hydrated when working out.
Drinking more water can also be a great trick when trying to lose weight. “In two studies, drinking half a liter of water was shown to increase metabolism by 24-30% for up to 1.5 hours.” This means that for that amount of time, your body is burning more calories than it would be without that water.
Most importantly, water can help flush out sickness and get rid of daily headaches. It also helps you wake you up, so drink up before your eight am!
Mental Health: I’ve talked about migraines before, but water can definitely improve migraines pain significantly. This is because migraines can be triggered by dehydration, so getting your body’s water back up to par is a good first step in getting rid of a migraine!
Dehydration can trigger mental fatigue, meaning that your brain probably feels pretty drowsy and not up to studying. When you really need to buckle down and study, you should drink a cup or two of water! Water helps improve your memory, ability to focus, and flow of blood / oxygen to the brain.
Go drink some water and have a good day!!
