Passion Post: H20 is Important

Brought to you by Elena and Allison of Atherton!

Whenever I’m feeling like I’m having a bad day, the first thing my mom would always say is, “Hey, have you had enough water today?” I used to feel really bad all the time, and since I began making a conscious effort to drink six cups of water a day (equivalent to about three water bottles) I’ve felt immensely better. (I should note that most doctors say you should target eight cups of water a day, but I found that really difficult.)

Physical Health: Athletes lose anywhere from six to ten percent odog pool bubbles golden retriever swimming poolf their water weight while sweating. If doctors say that effects of dehydration can kick in as early as when you lose two percent of your body’s water content, it’s super important to keep yourself hydrated when working out.

Drinking more water can also be a great trick when trying to lose weight. “In two studies, drinking half a liter of water was shown to increase metabolism by 24-30% for up to 1.5 hours.” This means that for that amount of time, your body is burning more calories than it would be without that water.

Most importantly, water can help flush out sickness and get rid of daily headaches. It also helps you wake you up, so drink up before your eight am!

Mental Health: I’ve talked about migraines before, but water can definitely improve migraines pain significantly. This is because migraines can be triggered by dehydration, so getting your body’s water back up to par is a good first step in getting rid of a migraine!

Dehydration can trigger mental fatigue, meaning that your brain probably feels pretty drowsy and not up to studying. When you really need to buckle down and study, you should drink a cup or two of water! Water helps improve your memory, ability to focus, and flow of blood / oxygen to the brain.

Go drink some water and have a good day!!water drinking

Civic Issues: Wage Gap Isn’t Our Only Gap

“In all countries, men have a higher self-esteem than women do, but the gender gap varies. Confidence gap between men and women were smallest in the developing world.”

The beginning of this post is based around an article called Money Can’t Buy You Self-Esteem (if You’re a Woman) from Time‘s online magazine, published very recently in January. The article starts out by stating how overused the word empowerment is, how people can use it to refer to things both economically and emotionally, and how having one does not necessarily mean that the other follows.

As most people know, it has been seen through many surveys word wide that women tend to rate themselves as worse than men in almost any topic when rating themselves. For example, women tend to report that they are not as good at math as they actually are, where as men tend to oversell their own mathematic abilities (it was even mentioned that parents tend to think their sons are smarter than their daughters!!). This stems from the fact that men in general have a much higher self confidence.

The smallest gender differences were actually seen to be in Asian countries; “Women in Western cultures are more likely to compare themselves to men, whereas in Asian countries, women compare themselves to women.” In many Asian countries, women are expected to handle both the responsibility of the house and a job, which leads to them looking at other women who are able to handle both and feeling like they are not doing good enough.

yippywhippy international women's day women feminism feministWhen it comes to jobs, women report that they lose 50% of their confidence in reaching top management positions, where as men report a mere 10% less confidence. The fact remains that when people are told to picture someone in authority, the majority of people still picture a man in a suit.

I asked some of my friends to describe what they picture when I asked them to close their eyes and picture someone powerful. “He’s big… and they’re muscular,” explained a friend of mine who would like towomen feminism feminist girl power womens day remain anonymous. She immediately said he, meaning that the first thing she thought of was a man. Another friend responded confidently, “Strong jawline, independent, Superman or Batman.” This reminded me that we are so easily influenced by the things we see as a child, especially on TV or in movies.

In America, we grow up with lots of strong male figures — from TV to movies to your own home. It is expected for children to need a nurturing mother, but more importantly a strong stable father figure. Women are actually outnumbered onscreen by men three to one.

This post was a lot of everything, but I think I touched on how important feminism is and how women empowerment both economically and emotionally is needed globally. I think that once we establish more emotional empowerment, stemming from including more positive women role models for young girls in countries around the world, economic empowerment will follow because women will be more and more confident.

Passion Post: Stereotypical Post About How Yoga’s Great For You

So it’s the night before my big Stat final, I’m super stressed out, and my friend asks me if I want to go to a yoga class. What? Is she crazy? We have 20 hours before I’m about to be beaten up by an exam and she suggests to go to a fitness class? But I take her up on it.

You may think this fixed everything, I calmed down, wasn’t nervous at all, and did fabulously on my exam. That is far from true. That is because in order to reap the benefits from yoga, I’ve learned through research that you need to go more than one time for 45 minutes that one day. As with regular workouts, you can not expect to see huge biceps after one day killing it at the gym! Yoga, when incorporated into your daily life, can do amazing things for both your body and your brain.

I’m sure we’ve all seen the articles about how good yoga is for you. So here’s some fun facts about yoga’s health benefits that I bet you haven’t seen before!

Mental Health Benefits:

  • Yoga improves your (short term) memory! Some even say it may help prevent you from getting Alzheimer’s.yoga humour stitch
  • Yoga prevents the onset of some mental health conditions, anger control issues, and anxiety.
  • Practicing yoga in a class environment with others induces oxytocin, or the love hormone!
  • It supposedly makes you a kinder person, but I don’t really think that can be proven scientifically.

Physical Health Benefits:

  • Not that I would know this perdrinking yoga drunk yogasonally, but according to the internet it is a good hangover cure.
  • Improves asthma symptoms (because of the breathing exercises)
  • Can help stop insomnia! It has been proven that yoga is one of the few natural remedies to help those who suffer with insomnia to fall asleep.
  • It has been shown to help you lose weight

Civic Issue: Intersectionality Matters (Brought to You By Nicki Minaj)

NowThis news taylor swift nicki minaj mtv
The perfect most pop culturally relevant example of where white feminism is mistaken for feminism is when Nicki Minaj tweeted about her disappointment in not being nominated for video of the year. Minaj was seen as being ungrateful and selfish for publicly being upset when her video, Anaconda, did not receive nominations for the MTV’s VMA Video of the Year or Choreography awards.

She sent out many tweets in a rant form, giving the impression that she assumed the reason for her video’s lack of nominations was because of both her race and the girls in her video’s figures. Here are a few:

“When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination ?”

“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year ????

The second is the one that got Taylor Swift riled up. Taylor responds, saying that this is “unlike” Nicki to pit women against women, and that all Taylor has done is love and support her. Nicki says that none of her tweets are to Taylor, her name is not mentioned, and most importantly, this is not about her.

Taylor attempted to make the argument that Nicki’s tweets were not very “feminist” of her, and that she is pitting women against other women, when in reality she was simply trying to bring to attention that her video, which she thinks deserves recognition, was not given any. Taylor mistakenly was hurt by something that didn’t actually involve her, and then didn’t acknowledge the real problem at hand. Whether she meant to or not, she made theTaylor Nicki problem about her. Suddenly the internet was filled with stories on their “fight” that Nicki had not wanted; she wanted attention brought to her music, not to a false twitter war.

Look at Nicki’s response. She says, But you should speak on this. Women love to bring up that they make seventy six cents on the dollar for men but often forget that that only applies to some women — WHITE women. The gap increases as you look at minority women: black women make 64 cents to that dollar, and Latina women make almost only 50% at 56 cents.

Camila Moreira hit the nail on the head when she wrote, “Intersectionality, the belief that feminism shouldn’t simply be about sexism, is very important. Many feminists aren’t straight, white, middle-class, able-bodied, and cis-gendered women, which means that besides sexism, they face things like transphobia, homophobia, racism, ableism, and of course, sexism.”

If the issue was really that Nicki’s video was too sexual…

Were all of Britney Spears’ videos that were nominated for the same award that much cleaner?

Or better yet, remember Robin Thicke’s super rape-y video Blurred Lines?

robin thicke blurred linesYeah, okay, sure.

Regardless, the “Twitter War” ends with even Taylor Swift acknowledging her faults:

“I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke,” Swift wrote. “I’m sorry, Nicki.”
