The Science Side of tumblr

Greetings! I’m back again with another sample of funny posts of bloggers on tumblr. So, for many reasons I have brought up the different types of blogs on tumblr. I have also brought up the different types of people, themes, fandoms, etc. Well luckily, I have another one to share about. Tumblr bloggers are notorious for their jokes. They are quite snarky sometimes and because of this, they pick on sub-communities in the tumblr world.

So, what is this sub-community bloggers are taking their heat out on lately you may ask? The Science Side of tumblr! Yes, that’s it. See, the joke is that tumblr is meant to be entertaining. Of course, the majority of the population refuses to believe for a second that science is fun or entertaining. The ‘Science Side of tumblr’ has never really had a voice. No one ever cared. But recently, this has changed.

To be whitty or simply funny, bloggers will reply to text posts saying ‘What does the science side of tumblr have to say about this.’ But to be completely honest, they are trying to ‘come at’ science bloggers to say, “Hey, you’re useful in this case.” I think it is even more funny that the science side of tumblr responds just as passive aggresive to these comments. In most cases, they make the inquirer feel stupid or silly for asking. It is very entertaining. Some of the questions have little to do with science and more to do with social media.

Here are some examples of the science side of tumblr:

So, yes, thank you science side of tumblr.

Professional Tumblrs

Hey everyone! For the most part, I usually only talk about how tumblr is used as an entertainment device for bloggers. But, as you can imagine, there are professional uses for tumblr. Not every blogger is on tumblr to get their daily giggle or meet new friends. There are various blogs that have pushed bloggers to be famous because they chose to showcase their work and keep their blog strictly professional. I’m going to introduce a “How To”, if you please, to show how this can be done.

prof1

DO:

– Have a simple blog name that is easy to remember. If someone has to bookmark your blog because they cannot remember your blog name, you probably need to simplify it.

– Answer the questions of your readers. But, make sure that the questions you are answering are useful and don’t contain profanity or silly anon hate.

– Have a nice layout/theme. If your theme is too busy or hard to navigate then no one is ever going to want to go through it.

– Show your personality! No one likes talking to a robotic computer. Sound fun, energetic, and easy to talk to.

– Update your followers on the interesting things that you are doing. People like to see your success. It’s inspirational.

DON’T:

– Use profanity or slang on your professional blog. If anything, if there is jargon that people in your field use, by all means use them. But curse words and words that make you sound unintelligent and less credible is detrimental to your image.

– Blog sparingly. People like to have an immense amount of resources on their hands. If you only blog once a week people are going to look for more consistent blogs.

– Advertise your personal blog. Please do not advertise your personal blog unless you are absolutely sure that it won’t harm your professional look.

I hope this was very helpful. Professional blogs are out there and you could have one of your own.

Guys Don’t Like When Girls Wear…

Hello everyone! I’m back again with another ‘tumblr theme’ of the week. It has been brought to my attention that this month is Sexual Harassment Awareness month. In support of this cause I took the liberty of writing about a topic that talks about something that is trending on tumblr that directly deals with this cause.

So, ladies, have you ever been ridiculed or commented on by a guy based off of what you are wearing? Or men, have you ever caught yourself telling your lady friends not to wear something because “guys don’t like that.” Well, if you can relate, this is for you.

Currently on tumblr a lot of bloggers are creating series of posts entitled “Guys Don’t Like When Girls Wear…” to call this behavior to attention. These posts consist of examples and/or displays of how this happens. More importantly, guys are starting to make their own posts entitled, “Girls Don’t Like When Guys Wear…” to combat the original posts.

I think that these posts are absolutely wonderful. On one hand, it is awful that genders are stigmatizing particular gender roles onto the opposite gender to keep them within a specific gender bubble. But on the other hand, this is combating against misogyny and misandry.

The important thing is that everyone should be entitled to their individual style. No one should be ridiculed for enjoying their aesthetic pleasures. It is up to the sole individual to decide on what they want to wear. Females should not put pressure upon males to conform and vice versa. So hail to these posts! I am very much enjoying them. I look forward to reading more of them in the future.

Fitblrs

Shout out to all of my health readers/bloggers out there! This one is for you.

bashful

So, we all know our occasional health nuts or gym monkeys. But what you may not know is that in their free time they HEAVILY enjoy blogging. That’s right. I am talking about fitblrs. What is a fitblr? I’m glad you asked. A fitblr is a health conscious tumblr blog that is completely themed and centered around being healthy.

health banana

I follow my fair share of fitblrs. I love them! They are great sources for inspiration and new ideas for getting your health where it needs to be. Some of the bloggers are professionals, others are amateurs who want to stay on track. It is all a great big community of people who are concerned with doing better for themselves and encouraging others to do the same.

health together

Now, just like everything else on tumblr, fitblrs can get a little complicated. There are different types of fitblrs focusing on more concentrated things. I’m going to take you through the different fitblrs you might encounter.

There’s the CHEF fitblr:

food porn health

These are the fitblrs that are constantly uploading the most yummy looking food you have ever seen. However, in some cases, the food looks like something you would never be able to pull off in real life. I like these fitblrs because they make me want to get in a kitchen and become a superstar 🙂

Then there’s the BODY POSITIVITY fitblr:

body love body pos

Seriously, if you are ever feeling down about your body or appearance, body positivity and inspiration is super helpful and encouraging. These are very supportive bloggers who are there to lift up the self esteem of everyone around them. It makes me smile. They answer practically every message they get and are very inspiring to be a better person.

(TW*) Unfortunately there used to be PRO-ANA fitblrs:

oh no

These have been blocked and removed from tumblr. You are not even able to look up pro-ana tumblrs anymore because it was a damaging the health and mindset of a lot of young people. I’m very excited that these are no longer a thing.

WEIGHT LOSS fitblr:

workout

This is pretty self explanatory but nonetheless, one of my favorites. These blogs are usually centered around the blogger itself. They update the followers about how they are doing, what they are eating, and rewards that they give themselves once they meet a goal. It makes me want to do something like go on a run instead of scrolling past gifs.

So, do you follow fitblrs? Did you know what a fitblr was? Do you think you could run a fitblr? I know I can’t 😉

Tumblr Dictionary (..continued)

Here are the last bit of words that I came up with that are commonly used on tumblr:

GPOY

tumblr_mxgn6iqJ671r9tcxgo10_250

By the second year I was on tumblr, the phrase GPOY became extremely popular. It annoyed my because I felt like I was missing out on something. GPOY stands for “Gratuitous Picture of Yourself.” Basically, it’s just a picture that embodies something that you do.

Gif

tumblr_inline_mruatoZUAo1qz4rgp

Short motion picture that loops around and replays continuously.

Gif Set

tom1 tom2

tom3 tom4

tom5 tom6

A bunch of gifs coupled together. They usually correspond to a theme.

Anon

anon

Short for anonymous. This comes into play when people send anonymous messages to other people. The person is addressed as an ‘anon’.

Anon Hate (tw*)

anon hate

When people send messages on anonymous that are hurtful or in order to ‘hate’ on somebody else.

Dash

dash

Short for dashboard. The dashboard is used in order to scroll over tumblr content.

Queue

queue

Queues are set up on tumblr to set a post for a specific time other than the present. You could set any type of media to display on your blog or to be posted at a specific time and date.

Boost

boost

This basically means to forward on. For example, a group of young women are very interested in writing. They may take up creating zines. In order to ensure that they are taken seriously or forwarded/reblogged, they tag their post with ‘Boost’ or #Boost. It is a form of encouragement.

Irl

This stands for ‘In real life.’ For example, “I really wish I knew Angelina Jolie irl. That’d be so cool.”

“I can’t even”

This is a very popular phrase. Whenever you see something to the point where you are overloaded with feelings and you’re not sure how to react. For example, when I saw the first preview for Maleficent. I said, “I can’t even” because I was so excited. I could barely contain myself or put my excitement into words.

“I’m dying”

I’m dying is basically another way for saying that you’re laughing. Except, in this case it means that you are laughing EXTREMELY hard. It is a belly laugh.

tumblr dictionary!

confused

Okay, so I remember when I had just started to use tumblr I was lost on so many levels. On one hand, it is kind of complicated to maneuver the website when you first start. Then once you get the hang of things, it is even harder to figure out what in the world everyone is talking about. There are a few words that are staples when it comes to tumblr jargon. I am here to introduce 3 of them to you, seeing as though I will probably use them a lot in future posts.

Fandoms

fandom fandom2

What the heck is a fandom? Well, a fandom is a group of fans who all share a common interest. Sounds simple, right? But you’d be surprised how complex the fandoms get on tumblr. They try to name or label themselves so they are easily recognizable by other members of the same fandom. For example, Scandal fans call themselves ‘Gladiators’ or One Direction fans call themselves ‘Directioners’. But don’t be mistaken. Fandoms are not just subject to tumblr. They are very much a real thing in the real world. Just think, tumblr wasn’t around when Star Trek or Star Wars was a big deal 😉

Ship/Shipping

shipping shippingg

This is a big deal on tumblr because there are so many fandoms generated by the tumblr community. It is not a surprise that many of these fandoms ‘ship’ specific characters. Shipping simply means that you adore two characters together. You could ship characters in real life or on the television screen. For example, I ship Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in real life but not on The Hunger Games.

OTP

OTP

OTP stands for ‘One True Pairing’. This directly relates to shipping. However, your OTP would be your absolute favorite pairing of characters amongst a specific fandom. Many of these OTP’s have names formulated by the fandoms. For example, in the Scandal fandom (Gladiators), many fans OTP Olivia Pope and Fitz Grant. The fandom has adorned this OTP with the name ‘Olitz’.

Are you an avid tumblr user? What are some words that you struggled to understand at first? There are plenty more to come. I will reintroduce some more words next week! 🙂

Romanticizing

If there is one thing that all tumblr users do for sure, it is romanticize. The whole point of tumblr is to get away and enjoy a stream of things that are awesome and appeal to the bloggers. It is no wonder why many blogs are centered around various things that the user desires. Now, I believe that this is a big reason why people pick the themes that they do on tumblr. In most cases, the theme is adjusted in regards to how the blogger is trying to put their point across. It also seems as though the things that people romanticize the most become a huge stigma on tumblr because they are things that are often reblogged way more than others.

So here’s a list of the top 5 things commonly romanticized on tumblr:

[[possible trigger warning, in advance]]

1.  Specific Body Parts

body2

This may sound a little ridiculous at first. But, trust me, this is a real thing. It is VERY common to see a lot of pictures of legs, collar bones, hands, muscles, backs, hip bones, jaw lines, etc. Think of a body part that you find people to be very self conscious about and I can assure you, the ‘artificial’ or ‘desirable’ form of that body part IS romanticized on tumblr constantly.

2. Summer

summeee

Everyone has their fair share of romanticizing after summer in the winter! It’s natural to want the cold in the heat or vice versa. The same is true for tumblr. There are a lot of images of beaches and vacation areas. Everyone wants to be out in the sun having fun instead of being in school.

3. Sadness/Depression

depression

It saddens me to say that this is a thing that is frequently romanticized after on tumblr, but it is very true. So true, that the #suicide tag on tumblr is monitored and has a message comes up whenever it is searched:

suicide dep desperation

4. Perfect Relationships

perfff

This is pretty self explanitory. There is a lot of people on tumblr looking for the perfect ‘mate’. So frequently you will see images of these awesome looking couples who are happy and look like they were made for each other. I often ask myself, “Who takes these pictures?” because they always seem very staged. Nevertheless, they are very nice pictures to look at.

5. Traveling/Wanderlust

travel

It seems like everyone wants to be somewhere else on tumblr. Some people specifically only have tumblrs dedicated to architecture, scenery, photography, travelling and vacation.

So, what do you romanticize about most? What do you plan on daydreaming about?

It’s a Stitch!

We all know that one teenage girl who just can’t help but doodle in their journal during class. It typically looks like a lot of little drawings of hearts, quotes, squiggly lines, and acronyms. It is usually just to past time and to give anxious hands something to do while a professor drones on about some lecture.

Anyways, what i’m getting at is that there has been a new trend on tumblr that has become a popular past time. There isn’t quite a universally accepted term for it yet, but I call it stitching. It is practically cross stitching with a twist. Let me explain. Picture one of those old, traditionally patterned sweaters that maybe a grandmother or an older relative gave to you as a gift. If you still don’t know what i’m talking about, think of the ugly sweaters for Christmas.

tumblr_n0p8r3v8RK1s573hto1_500

Well currently, more and more girls (mostly) on tumblr have been uploading pictures of them stitching quotes and designs into either sweater or cotton sheet materials. These stitching looks very traditional and similar to traditionally designed sweaters.

11883085214_0d994b4450_n

I think it looks pretty awesome and some of them are extremely entertaining. I find myself asking how these people are able to create such well made entries. The quotes on these stitchings can range from a variety of topics whether they be political, humorous, controversial, or emotional.

princess_bride_quote_by_sew_madd-d65mb42tumblr_n16ep4dwMk1tqdxmno1_500

It looks like our generation is picking up sewing for social media. I think it’s wonderful because it’s a healthy hobby to have that can have a big influence on our views toward things. Also, it is an artistic outlet through an already artistic social community. The sub categories are endless.

So what do you think? Do you like the stitching and if so, why or why not? I think I might have to find a needle and thread.

Tumblr

I think it would be highly beneficial to back track and explain to everyone what tumblr is. I mean, unless you are already a tumblr user, I would probably suspect that you might not have any idea how tumblr works.

Well i’ll tell you this, tumblr is a lot of things. It can be used for work, hobbies, fun, enjoyment, boredom, etc. I can’t exactly say that tumblr is for one particular use. However, I can say that tumblr is a social media website with a strong community of bloggers.

Social-Media

So, how does tumblr work? Basically you can make an account and then you go from there. Each user has what is called a dashboard. This is similar to what people call their timeline or newsfeed on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. It is an infinite page compiled of the updates from all of the blogs that you follow. The dashboard is in order from most recent posts to less recent. It is also where users are able to update their own blog with photos, text, audio, quotes, video, and chat so that their followers can get updates as well.

TumblrMainDashboard

The two most important things to understand on tumblr is the ‘like’ and ‘reblog’ button. Users can upload their own original posts. However, most do not do this. Most users ‘like’ things that the blogs they’re following have also ‘liked’ or ‘reblogged’. This creates an ongoing cycle of shared enjoyment.

Screen-Shot-2013-05-19-at-02.14.44

To get even more specific, there are themes on tumblr. Themes are used to describe what time of blog a user is running. Not everyone strictly follows a theme, but many users do. Themes also influence the type of blogs that people follow because it makes it easier for them to keep their own blog theme centered. For example, a user may have a ‘punk’ blog (blog centered around punk culture, fashion, etc.) and they follow all types of other punk blogs that are similar to them. Before you know it, there are tons of sub-communities within the entire tumblr community.

So, do you blog? Is it on tumblr or another blogging website? How often do you do it?

The Queens!

On tumblr it is always a haul between who has the best looks, personalities, fandoms, themes, etc. But when it comes to who tumblr thinks is the top women of our time right now, as far as being a ‘Queen’ goes, it is hands down the women in which we all love.

Ellen Degeneres:

ellen

Ellen Degeneres is a talk show host, actress, comedian, Cover Girl,  and philanthropist. Bloggers never cease to stop talking about how much they love Ellen. She can do no wrong. She’s witty, strong, and hilarious. She is the quintessential queen. She is even well accepted by the media even while being openly honest about her sexuality and thoughts on current politics. Without a doubt, she is awesome!

Jennifer Lawrence:

jennifer

Jennifer Lawrence is an actress with a witty, nontraditional sense of humor. Apart from what the media would normally expect out of a young actress, Jennifer Lawrence is different. She has won countless awards in a short amount of time and is a huge role-model for young women today. She openly talks out about body appreciation and how the media portrays her. She has little to no filter when it comes to what she believes in and that is why we love her.

Beyonce Knowles:

beyy

Queen Bey! Beyonce never quits. Just when you think she is taking a break, she comes back harder than before. There is no doubt that tumblr undeniably loves Beyonce. The amount of love and appreciation she gets from PoC blogs is absolutely unconditional. She has numerous awards and recently broke multiple records for her current album. BEYONCE. She inspires young women all over the world and even has a strong relationship with the Obamas.

So what do you think? Is there other people that you see on tumblr who is without a doubt a Queen? Do you agree or disagree? If I had to choose some other Queens of tumblr, I would choose Lana Del Rey and Lorde.
