MakerNet

Below is information about TLT MakerNet as well as a brief FAQ. Please review this underlying networking service to get up to speed on how it enables our IMEX Lab gear.

What is MakerNet?

TLT MakerNet is a secondary, BYOD (bring your own device) network that allows for secure access to internet resources for devices that are not allowed on the primary PSU wireless across the University. Through TLT MakerNet, standalone headsets and other gear can function seamlessly while on-campus.

How does MakerNet work?

Without getting too technical, TLT MakerNet leverages the same technology that allows students to connect their own devices like gaming consoles to the internet in residence halls. The Media Commons team registers headsets and other gear to TLT MakerNet once and then these devices are able to connect wirelessly to the internet in designated areas across all Commonwealth campuses.

Are there restrictions on MakerNet?

TLT MakerNet allows for unrestricted access to the internet outside of the University – within the limits of any connected device’s capabilities. Access to University content (______.psu.edu addressed pages) is limited to those designated as allowed by the Media Commons team (imex.psu.edu, for instance).

The Media Commons team provisions access to TLT MakerNet by registering each device on the network. At present, 20 devices per Commonwealth location can be registered on TLT MakerNet.

Can I register a device for use with MakerNet?

Provisionally, yes.

If you have received devices from IMEX Lab specifically for use on-campus, you can use the TLT MakerNet Device Registration form to submit details to the team so that it can be added to the network.

If you have devices that have been purchased locally, the Media Commons team would be happy to discuss their compatibility with the purpose of MakerNet. Please use the Contact form to get in touch.

Remember: There is a 20 device limit per TLT MakerNet location at present.
