A Situational Observational Learning story

Observational learning, also known as social learning or vicarious learning, is a psychological process through which individuals acquire new knowledge, skills, or behaviors by observing others. It plays a significant role in human development, education, and socialization. By observing others, individuals can learn from their actions, outcomes, and the consequences they face. You have a passion for music and aspire to become a skilled guitarist. However, you feel that you’ve hit a plateau in your progress and are in dire need of inspiration and guidance.

One evening, you attend a local music concert featuring a renowned guitarist named Eric. As you watch Eric perform on stage, you are captivated by his skillful techniques, mesmerizing melodies, and the way he effortlessly connects with the audience. Intrigued and motivated, you decide to use observational learning to enhance your own guitar-playing abilities.

After the concert, you approach Eric and express your admiration for his talent. To your surprise, he warmly offers to give you a few pointers. Excitedly, you accept his offer and arrange to meet him for a guitar lesson.

During the lesson, you carefully observe Eric’s every move. You watch his fingers glide across the strings, his precise timing, and his unique playing style. You pay close attention to his body posture, hand positioning, and strumming techniques. In addition, you observe how he interacts with the instrument, using various effects pedals and creating captivating sounds

Armed with your newfound knowledge, you return home and begin to practice, emulating Eric’s techniques. You spend hours honing your skills, imitating his finger placements, and striving to replicate his musicality. Over time, you notice improvements in your own playing. Assimilation

Assimilation, a concept proposed by Jean Piaget, a renowned developmental psychologist, is the cognitive or brain process of taking in new information and sort of grouping it with already known information. Assimilation tends to occur around the ages of 2 and 7 in the preoperational phase. Some children start earlier and some start later all depending on the child. Essentially, when you find something new you process it and then make sense of relating it to things you know. For example, say you are a toddler and you see a dog and your parents tell you it’s a dog, then you see a cat and shout “dog”. Your parents tell you that it is a cat and the difference between them. But because of assimilation, you group them together as furry friends/pets. Assimilation is unlike accommodation in many ways; accommodation replaces existing knowledge with new information, new schemas may develop, and it transforms the current interpretation of reality. There can also be two ways to study. If you don’t know the information yet, use study methods related to accommodation. Once you feel like you have the information down, use assimilation to associate the new information with the previously known.

When I was a toddler I used to make these turkey noises but I had only ever heard a turkey and I had never really seen one. So I began thinking that all the birds made the turkey gobble. So when I would see a seagull at the beach when I was younger I would begin to make the turkey gobbling sound. It wasn’t until my mom showed me what a turkey is and a video of them at a farm gobbling did I associate the turkey noise with only one bird. That is how I got the nickname “Turk”.

 

This story relates to assimilation because as a toddler, I had a limited understanding of birds and their sounds. When I made turkey noises, I was trying to figure out and make the same sounds I had heard from turkeys. However, since I had not yet seen a turkey, I assimilated the turkey gobble sound to all birds. Meaning that I generalized the turkey gobble to other birds, such as seagulls. In my case, my schema for bird sounds was initially based on limited exposure I had to the turkey gobble. When I encountered different birds, like seagulls, I assimilated their sounds into my existing schema by associating them with the turkey gobble.However, as I mentioned, my understanding changed when my mother showed me what a turkey was and provided me with more information through a video. This new information allowed me to differentiate between turkeys and other bird species, leading to a more accurate understanding of bird sounds. This process is an example of accommodation.

 

Overall, my story exemplifies how assimilation and accommodation work together in cognitive development. Initially, I had assimilated the turkey gobble sound to all birds, but through new experiences and information, I accommodated my understanding and created a more accurate picture of the turkey sound and its association with a specific bird species.
