Dangers of a Single Story: Debunking Myths and Amplifying Voices of Iranian Women

Bridging the gap between Women’s History Month and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, Join the Iranian Student Association at Penn State (ISA) and Penn State Gender Equity Center as we celebrate the voices and stories of Iranian Women.

Women’s stories are part of the larger human story, however they are often silence, erased, or excluded from the human narrative, which is further silenced when intersections of race, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, gender identity, and other identities are layered on to the storyteller. Help us break this silence by joining us for a storytelling event to strengthen our connections with others and enables us to fully understand the human condition. The Iranian Student Association will lead a discussion around the History of Women’s Rights in Iran, debunking myths around Iranian women and amplifying women’s voices by hosting performances of storytelling through written narrative, song, and poetry by Iranian members of the Penn State Community.

Part 1 (30 minutes): Presentation on the history of Women’s Rights in Iran, debunking myths about the current efforts around women, life, and freedom movement, and sharing the stories not being heard.

Part 2 (30 minutes): Storytelling portion where members of ISA or other Iranian students, faculty, and staff share a story, poem, or song related to their lived experiences as Iranian women.

Time: Tuesday, April 4th at 6:30 p.m.

Location: HUB-Robeson Center, Freeman Auditorium
