Technology in the Automotive Industry

As I was growing up I was constantly around cars, so I’ve always taken an interest in them. Obviously there’s a lot of technology that goes into cars to make them easier to use, more efficient, etc. The differences between Henry Ford’s Model T in 1908 and the automobiles we see today are absolutely incredible due to the technological advances that have surfaced along the way.

In a CNN article that I found the Consumer Reports review of one of the newest Tesla models is discussed. Tesla’s Model S P85D, which is completely electric, is rated by Consumer Reports based on multiple criteria. “Consumer Reports rates vehicles on a zero-to-100 scale, but Tesla’s high-performance, all-wheel-drive car scored 103” (CNN). Because scientists and engineers have made so many advances in the technology behind automobiles, Tesla’s electric car is able to put forth an almost perfect performance. Granted there are some features that do still need to be developed further. Factors such as the fuel efficiency aspect have increased though, which is one of the reasons why it can put out such a great performance. Even though the P85D is an all-electric car, it is able to achieve the equivalent of over eighty miles per gallon. Looking back at the Model T’s fuel efficiency of around eighteen miles per gallon, the difference is quite clear. The enormous strides in the technology industry can clearly be seen throughout the automobile industry as well.

  1. Technology today is having a major affect on the car industry. In an article I read, Wall Street analysts were discussing the rumors about Apple coming out with the iCar in 2019. This car would take a massive leap for the car industry, but the massive profits and revenue would be just adding to the enormous wealth that Apple already has. Some of the improvements that are predicted to happen run along the lines of computers built into the car, camera sensors on all ends of the car, GPS, LIDAR, and LTE installed directly to the roof of the car and even an optional steering feature. Even car competitors are curious about the features Apple has in store and they want to see them put to work. This could cause a massive shift in the technology world to open a new area of industry and create all new ideas and establish a new era that could even bring in self driving cars.
I personally can’t wait to see what amazing things that Apple is actually able to create, and how the competitors are going to try and keep up with them. Apple is going to spark a new generation of people that may not even need a license anymore, because their car can drive for themselves. This would create an interesting change in laws involving driving and technology and seeing how they can play together to hopefully do more good than evil. If this does take off and become a real creation, it’s going to have a major impact on the way we live our daily lives and how it’s going to enhance the technology world with creating a new outlet of products.

  2. Throughout the decade, cars have been influenced by technology within every model being produced. We go from the model T which computer technology was inexistent, to cars that include computers that check if your car has problems (check engine light, brake light, tire pressure etc) to cars that have GPS, satellite radio, backup cameras and sensors on the side of cars to let you know you are getting close to hitting something. Now looking into the future, i’m sure everyone has heard about the new google self driving car. In my opinion the self driving car is a bad idea. It takes away the human element in the decision making process which is always needed for certain tasks… especially driving. Cars should always be driven by people because people need to be able to make the quick decision making to avoid: other cars, people, falling objects etc. Also if someone was able to hack the computer driving the car, that can lead to fatalities.

Here is an article about the self driving car… what do you guys think?http://www.google.com/selfdrivingcar/

Here is an article that supports my opinion about self driving cars have a negative impact.

  3. Technology is one of the most important industry that can guide the future.
One of my friend, who studied in Bently University and read Elon Musk’s biography before, told me that the all-electric car Tesla Model S can actually be as fast as McLaren and Ferrari.
I cannot believe how Elon Musk developed the all-electric car, because there are so much trouble to deal with: how to charge the battery, how to avoid out of power, how to become as fast and nimble as the normal oil-burning car. However, he succeed with incredible effort.
In my opinion, Tesla will become one of the most influential company in the future like GOOGLE, because currently, we are running out of oil and gas, which means, we need clean energy like electricity. We also need to lessen the number of oil-burning cars to improve the greenhouse effect.
So, technology can always blow your mind. Just imagine the computer and cellphone 15 years ago.
