What It’ll Be Like When Apple Takes Over Your Car?

Apple has officially announced Carplay, a means of natively bring your iPhone’s capabilities into the car (so excited~) As Apple puts it, CarPlay” take the things you want to do with your iPhone and puts them right on your car’s built-in display” This means you can send and receive email, texts, use GPS navigation via Apple Maps, and more. Of course it has Siri capabilities so that you can interact with it by voice, but you can also use your car’s knobs or your car display’s touchscreen.

CarPlay

There are three ways to control CarPlay, and none of them include touching, looking or even thinking about your phone.

  1. Control CarPlay using Siri: you will be able to talk to your vehicles and tell it what to do by using Siri. That includes playing music from your band or even requesting a specific playlist. You’ll also be able to have your messages read out to you before you dictate your reply.
  2. Use a touchscreen display: you will be able to open and close apps using a very simply home screen. This will certainly be the most straightforward method of using CarPlay.
  3. Use you knobs: you car will still have physical buttons, knobs and controls and you will still be able to use hese alongside the touchscreen and Siri option. Volume controls, track ship and the like are all seamlessly integrated and will work as expected.

There is a big rival to Apple CarPlay. Google is already heavily involved in this car technology space. In fact, with its huge investment in Google Maps and driverless car technology, some would say that Google is already well ahead of Apple when it comes to in-car tech.

What’s your opinion about CarPlay? Do you like it or not?

  1. As great as CarPlay sounds, it still needs a lot of work to ensure that it will do more good than harm. With the Internet of Things starting to make leeway, it is not surprising that having your iPhone hooked-up to your car is a new feature.
Even though it allows a person to keep their hands on the wheel and not texting or dialing, a person is not as focused on driving as they would be if they weren’t using their phone at all. They are still trying to multitask, which will distract them from focusing on one thing at a time. Notifications will still appear on the display panel, which poses as a distraction to the driver. Also it will be hard to make sure Siri picks up on exactly what you are saying, so voice clarity is a main concern. Also using Siri to send messages will be annoying especially if she cant understand or keep up with what you are saying, so it is much better used for short messages rather than actually conversations. Also after reading more about CarPlay, I learned that Apple is not allowing Google maps to be used, which is much faster than Apple’s Maps app. The user is also limited to how much they can scroll on an app while driving, and you cant use third-party messaging apps while using CarPlay. Overall, I think CarPlay is a good start implementing the Internet of Things, but before it can become standard in cars there needs to be a lot more research and changes to make sure CarPlay will be successful with users. 2. I think CarPlay would be great. Syncing your iPhone to your car is all part of the up and coming Internet of Things and I believe that being able to access your phone’s capabilities through the car will decrease the amount of people using their phone while driving. Obviously if all the features are through the car, it is accessible through safe ways which could save a lot of accidents that are due to phone related causes.

After further research, this feature is far from perfect and has a long way to go. I mentioned the fact that people will stop using their phones if they have CarPlay, but CarPlay doesn’t disable the use of your phone while it is connected. I’m sure people will still think that using their phone to accomplish tasks is quicker, not to mention they are used to picking up their phone if they need something. Do you think you would immediately switch and never use your phone while driving?

Also, messages and notifications still appear on the display. Just a quick check of a notification can still cause an accident. If you haven’t seen this video, check it out.

As of now, CarPlay is only for a specific few tasks. Especially with different operating systems that people don’t immediately update, switching to using CarPlay could be a very confusing process and may cause more trouble in the beginning stages. I think Apple should hold off until the kinks are worked out since this could be potentially dangerous. What do you think?
