Vehicle to vehicle communication

Car accidents caused over 30,000 deaths in the US in 2013  and the problem with that fact is that this number is not decreasing. Automobiles are quick to install new safety features like airbags or collision warning alerts but this does not help the fact that the accident can still take place if the driver is under the influence of an intoxicant or in a similar situation. If only there was a way that the car could be self aware, for example picture your self walking on 5th avenue in New York City  or around time square, there are a massive number of people in that area which includes – tourists, people who live there, working professionals but whilst walking on the sidewalk humans dont keep bumping into each other even if it is a crowded street. The way we evade people coming our way is completely instinctive and we do not even have to think about whilst we are walking around people who are coming directly at us. This is because we have self awareness , the vehicle to vehicle technology that several companies are working on is something similar. Its designed to allow automobiles to talk to each other and communicate with each other in car to car network . Hence your car will know through this network, the speed of the cars around you, if the break has been pressed or not  and even the position of the steering. Henceforth taking road safety to a completely new level, if this is actually implemented, I cannot even imagine of how  dramatic the decline in car accidents will be. GM plans to introduce its car with this technology in 2017.

  1. This could open up many possibilities for the vehicle’s occupant. The time spent during the commute could be used to do remote work for the company and interact with potential clients. This could increase productivity and the speed with which the customer of a company can receive different benefits. These things could in turn lead to happier employees who don’t have to work as long and more satisfaction from the customers who receive things sooner.

  2. This is a great idea for future car companies to look into. Should this technology become available it could easily lower the amount of car accidents in any given year. I agree that some of the technology referred to us during the “internet of things” portion of our class could be used to implement this technology allowing similar technologies in different cars to communicate with each other.

  3. When I think of a future with driverless cars, this is the main benefit I think of. Even further than just having cars communicating with each other we could have the environment communicating with cars as well. If this technology was implemented in cities, or even utilized in planning new developments, safety could be improved immensely. In addition, this use of the Internet of Things could improve travel efficiency through highly accurate traffic data being reported. I think that utilizing IoT ideas such as this, which focus on improving safety, is a way that technology can be used to make tangible and important changes to our society.

  4. I think this is a good step toward decreasing total car accidents. That being said, if we are going forward with technology like this, why not go all the way to driverless cars? This technology seems like a really great idea. It helps with car safety and makes driving a safer thing for pedestrians as well as drivers. I think it is interesting how a technology like this is easier to implement than something more dramatic than driverless cars. The technologies are similar enough. They are both very innovative and would change the way people drive and think about safety. But, driverless cars are more feared by most of the public. It is the same thing that happens with all different types of technology. People tend to fear what they don’t understand. Car to car communication is similar to technology that already exists but is just tweaked in an innovative way. Driverless vehicles are something that is so foreign to most people that fear is immediately instilled. I think eventually all cars will be driverless because it has been proven that people are able to create machines that can operate safely without much human interaction. That day might be far away but this technology could be a good stepping stone.

  5. This is a terrific idea, but I do think that there are strides to be made before technology like this can come to market. For example, if this technology was to short circuit or break while an individual was driving, it could have catastrophic consequences. However, this is an excellent example of the internet of things. We can see with these cars that are connected that there is a wealth of information that can be revealed from keeping track of data that these cars produce. It will also be interesting to see what parameters are set for these cars for them to deem what is “safe” and what is not.

  6. There are various view points to consider for this idea. On the one hand, it truly is a great and progressive idea. It combines safety and intelligence, and I don’t believe implementation would be hard. Cars are very high tech in general and can sense when it may hit another car; Ie my review mirrors flash when a car is coming by me so I do not merge, there are commercials where cars will stop if it sees it will run into a car in front of it. But on the other hand, what if there are glitches and it causes an accident rather than prevent one? Also, are there ways to prevent people hacking in to those systems and overriding cars? It brings in the question of mass data and privacy. I would also like to know how they will implement this. I would think that every company will use their own sensors, so will each brand have to communicate with each other? Or will the American Government make it standard for all cars? Overall, I like the idea it is just a matter of protection and privacy

  7. I think this is a very cool idea that would allow people to be able to be much more comfortable on the road because they feel they are safe. However, what I see is just another infringement on the right of privacy for the sake of convenience. If my car is able to know the location, speed, and direction of another car then who has access to my location details. I turn off my GPS on my phone and only turn it on when I need to. This seems as though your car will be connected to some form of the internet, most likely a completely different sever than the world wide web, but who will run this server? Will the data be collected? It definitely would make the world a little safer but safety is not always the key target.

  8. This is a very intriguing proposal that I think could work very well. I think it is a great way to reduce driving accidents that doesn’t infringe on people’e ability to drive their cars (i.e. self-driving cars). In addition, I immediately related this to a familiar class discussion topic – The Internet of Things. This is exactly what the Internet of Things is–using sensors and processors to create a connected network of physical objects. Automobiles are an area where I think the Internet of Things could do great things. It is hard to see a down-side of this, except for maybe hackers taking advantage of this technology for malicious intent. It’ll be interesting to see if/when this gets implemented on a large scale.
