Amazon Dash

Getting low on toothpaste? Running out of toilet paper but don’t have the time to go to the store this week? Amazon has you covered! Amazon has come up with this new technology called Amazon Dash. Basically, when you are getting low on your household items, you can press the dash button and Amazon will ship the exact same item to your house the next day. 0ED993FA00000514-0-The_butto-a-41_1472600326238

This seems very practical and helpful for those busy weeks when you just can’t seem to find a moment to rest, but eventually I would get tired of receiving the same product over and over and over again. When I run out of something, let’s say coffee, I like to try something new the next time I go to the store. The Amazon Dash buttons don’t provide you with the option to purchase a different brand. You currently have Maxwell House coffee in your cupboard? That is what you are stuck drinking every morning for the rest of your life. Crouch-Amazon-dash-button-1200-630-02164033

Also, the Amazon Dash would not mix well with all of those couponers out there. Being a poor college student,  I am really into using coupons and buying what is on sale. The Amazon Dash button wouldn’t allow me to use my coupons or select the product that is on sale that week. With that being said, if Amazon could come up with a Dash button that would find the brands that were on sale for a certain product that I needed, I would be more inclined to use it. I enjoy going to the grocery store and looking at all of the different products that are out there. Amazon has not yet convinced me to wake up to the same coffee for the rest of my life, even if it may be a little less work than going to the dreaded grocery store.

  1. I believe that this is a wonderful idea and Amazon is taking advantage of that fact that people are not only lazy but also forgetful. It is very easy to just push a button and have a product arrive the next day. A few of these devices in a household could drastically reduce the amount of shopping trips a person has to take in order to be well stocked in different things (i.e. dish soap, laundry detergent, napkins, etc.). The device saves people time and gas money which leads me to believe it could become a fairly popular product.

However, online shopping is hitting retail hard. Retail stores and shopping malls are slowly closing due to the fact that many people would rather shop from the comfort of their own sofa than to drive to the store where the selection of items is not nearly as vast. Online shopping gives people the newest items at the best prices, putting pressure on retail stores to do the same. Some companies, such as Walmart, have kept up with the technological shopping revolution and have websites with a large selection of items to buy, but not every company has made this transition and some are now going under. While this may not discourage most people from online shopping, it is something to keep in mind if you choose to do so.

  2. The company says the aim is to do away with the most tedious of shopping experiences.
“Nobody gets retail therapy shopping for toilet paper,” as the executive demonstrating the Dash button explained to me.

The Dash button narrows your options to what, at best, will be the stock Amazon price on what you wanted, and at worst, lack applicable discounts, optimally priced configurations, or even the option to buy the product that you loyally purchase through Amazon already. Why doesn’t Dash just offer the option to program a button with any product you want, or at least any product you want under a certain brand? The Dash button makes you pay for its supposed convenience by removing potential discounts. It’s not enough that you’re hanging advertisements in the nooks and crannies of your home. You need to cough up extra cash to use the Dash, too.

  3. If someone is very brand loyal or they really love a specific product then this is an awesome idea. People solely have to push a button and they will reorder their favorite product. Many people enjoy ordering their products online anyway in this day and age. Why? It saves a ton of time and they can get exactly what they want delivered right to their doorstep. Surveyed online shoppers said they make 51% of their purchases online. What do you do when the store is out of your favorite brand of BBQ sauce? Order it online.

Other people like to go to the store or browse the web to see what is new or try a recently advertised product. You never know what you could be missing out on if a new product comes out. For example, someone who does not go to the store may never discover when they come out with a new kind of Lays potato chips. Also, as Lauren stated, you may just get sick of having the same thing every day. That would lead you to look for something new either in the store or on the web.
