Does Apple Really Have the New “Gaming Stuff?”

iphone

Going back to the September release of information on the Iphone 7, Apple made a bid to attract gamers. Their bid was a bit weak to say the least. They talked about the release of the A-10 fusion chip. The fastest graphics and processing power card to come to cell phones. Although this is quite the electronic feat for Apple, is this still impressive looking at gaming as a whole?

Apple has never been known as a contender in the gaming industry. Although mobile gaming may very well be on the up and coming, will it ever compare to the hype of PC gaming? If we look at the more serious side of gaming, tournaments, that is. We see PC gaming being a much more substantial, as well as influential form of entertainment. According to the Esports website, the largest tournament of the year went to Dota 2 with a prize pool of $20,770,640.00. A massive prize pool that has been growing every year as the game itself continues to grow. If we compare this to mobile gaming, there really is not much of anything to compare. One of the largest mobile gaming tournaments was for the game Clash Royale, with a prize pool of approximately $15,000.00 according the the Esports website.

To come back to the main subject, is mobile gaming really on the up and coming? Is there ever a possibility of it surpassing PC gaming? Or is Apple just trying to find a way to brag about their new processing chip? Has Apple ever really had the right to brag about gaming whatsoever? Feel free to comment and state your opinions!

  1. I am an avid PC gamer as well as a slightly less avid smartphone gamer. I do not think any of the major smartphone companies are moving in the right direction in terms of mobile gaming. The introduction of stronger hardware means two things – it means higher graphics capabilities and more importantly, huge battery drain. And in my opinion, this is the wrong direction.

On PC gaming, it is very clear what the future is. PC’s are huge blocks of pure processing power. When we want to PC game, we want graphics and whatever higher processing power we can get.

For mobile gaming, I believe that the future is actually in higher battery and possibly lower performance. If we look at the most popular games in Google play or the app store, i will never be a graphically intensive game. It will always be a simple game such as angry birds, clash of clans, etc. When playing these games, we do not care about the graphics as much as the gameplay itself. Better graphics will make it look shinier, but it will also kill the battery life, which is another key part about mobile gaming. Better processors may introduce better graphics, but they greatly take away from battery life, which I would argue is much more important.

  2. I believe that this is an interesting concept considering Nintendo just announced their new product the Nintendo Switch. With Nintendo being one of the best companies in the gaming industry it’s hard to see anyone surpassing their platform. With the Nintendo Switch being a portable console this could be huge competition for Apple considering any sort of gaming system they release will also be portable. With people always on the go and with products being released on portable platforms I think PC gaming is going to begin to slow down. People are always going places and when they have free time on the bus or in a waiting room having a portable system would be more efficient since they can be anywhere to play. I think that more gaming companies are going to start seeing all of these up and coming portable gaming devices and switch platforms from PC to mobile. I believe that if Apple does release a mobile gaming surface their biggest competition won’t be PC gaming but instead will be any portable Nintendo product considering Nintendo already dominates that industry.
